I was wondering what is the difference from a 20 to 28 gauge? Does a 20 hold alot more shot? would it be easier to shoot or hit clay targets with a 20? What about on doves or quail? Thanks..

I know a couple of folks that use them, they seem to do fine. Only complaint I hear about 28's is finding shells, and the price of them.

If I was looking for a shotgun and couldn't decide between the two, I'd pick a 20 for the reasons I listed above, from my experience recoil is about the same.

Most 20ga loads are 7/8oz of shot..

28ga are 3/4oz of shot..

That is 1/8oz difference.....It has been said a 28ga patterns better than a 20ga,
but I do not own one yet to prove that.
I want a 28ga O/U to match my 20ga O/U Browning....but alas $$$$$

Answer is eight. Plus, if you're gonna go with a 28 ga, you have to switch from coffee to tea. :-)

Seriously, there isn't that much difference in recoil, and a minimal difference in pattern. But if you're buying a 28 because it's a good deal, you might want to check the price & availability of shells. Might find it to be more expensive in the not-very-long term.

I have both a 20 gauge and a 28.Only thing against the 28 is cost of shells, but I reload so no problem. It cost about 3.00 a box to reload. The 28 is a lot more fun to shoot.Mine just fits great.

With a 20ga you can shoot 3" mag shells that gets your shot capacity to almost twice what a 28ga holds. The 28ga is limited to 2 3/4" shells. Most 28s are lighter wight guns so there is not as much recoil reduction with a 28 as you might think. A good light weight 28 is really nice in the field smoking fast wing morning doves.

Cost of shells is the biggest difference. Most 28ga hulls are target hulls ie Winchester are AA hulls which are great for reloading. That difference and they do not make as many 28s is the main diference in cost. Compare 20ga AA shells to 28ga shells and you are doing a better comparison in the cost of the shells.
