That is way cool. Not just a little drop either. No telling, but at his young age it may get a lot bigger. Of course he needs to get a lot bigger all over.
At some point in life its time to quit chasing the pot of gold and just enjoy the rainbow. FR Keep your gratitude higher than your expectations. RWH
We found out years ago that just because a buck has a drop this year doesn't mean it will have one every year. In most situations, bucks would have the drop or drops every other year. It will be interesting to see what that buck does because he appears to be very young and that's a prominent drop. Adios, Gary
Earlier in my hunting career i would have shot that dude so fast just because having a drop tine buck is cool. It wasn’t even a thought to shoot him. Just thought he was cool
I've been deer hunting every year since 1971, and have only seen one buck drop tine buck in my life, a 190" mule deer I got lucky and killed. They are rare for sure.
Drops are a weird one, we see them pretty often on young deer but they seem to vanish as they age. We’ve killed a few mature deer with them over the years but from what I’ve seen the young deer that have them eventually grow into split brows and G2’s and or 3’s with some having all of the above. We had a 8 point last year with 3 and 4” drops on both sides and this year they disappeared but he has split G2’s. Genetics and age make for some real unique deer so yours will probably have something totally different next year but he won’t be a slick 8 I bet.

Haven’t been hunting since 71’ but I’ve covered some country and only seen two native deer on the hoof that had drops….one a 4 year old 9 point that had a small 3” drop time off one beam and one 4x4 mule deer that had about a 9” drop tine that I passed up. Was a real narrow buck and didn’t look very “Mule Deer‘y” so I passed on him. Same trip another hunter shot a mule deer buck with small 3” double drops….have to go back thru the memory banks but that may be the only native genetic drop tine deer I’ve seen dead in person.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.
