Going to be in Houston next weekend and would like to go to a good gun store. Have always heard of Carter's Country. Is one of them better than the rest? Or is there a better store?

I’ve only been to the Southwest location. They had a good selection of guns, ammo, and clothing. But it’s been a few years.

The one on I10 west is near my house. It’s a great gun store and they’ve cleaned up their employee etiquette.

I have been to all of them. I10 is probably my favorite, followed by Southwest Freeway.

I used to go to the one on I-10 as it was closest to my house. I know many here do not like Collectors, but I've always liked to browse there. They have alway had the largest selection. Their prices tend to be on the high side.

I mostly visited the one on Treshwig, for shopping and shooting. They had a 200 yard range back then. I also visited the one on I-10, since it was close to where I worked.

I called on Carter's for lot's of years. I liked the location on the Freeway location best when working behind the counter for a Buy now/Pay later sale, but the store mgr wound up elsewhere as a golf buyer. 2nd best for me was the range store. Ask if Tommy Z (You spell Zeedunkiwitz if you can lololol) is still there, he was the head buyer back then, and Bill Jr was also a good guy to work with if you are looking for something hard to find. The 10 pt Mule Deer on the wall over my head as I type this was typical for Mr Carter giving the gun reps a Thank You hunt with all expense's & airfare paid.

Those were good years for me, even with the guys on Fondren & with the other chain store in town.

My Ruger .270 came from Carters country over on Shaver in Pasadena in 1997. Paid $479 for it and topped it with a 3x9 redfield scope that set us back another $185

About 5 months ago I found myself in the area over off Treschweg so I stopped to take a peek at the OG carters country store.

Was a pretty cool place, like going back in time.

Had a good selection of guns and ammo too.

Collector's is a must see if you happen to be a milsurp enthusiast, it's basically a museum. I got to handle a 16th century matchlock once there.

Way back when there was a single location tackle and gun store east of the big shopping center who's name I cannot pull from my murky brain. Mebbe CB Del Homme? The gun counter mgr was real tall guy, umm redheaded guy and I always tried to take him to lunch, cause he had 'Nam War contact's like no one else I can think of. It seems he was part of the "Lurp" team, program, tasked with going "in country" on foot with nuthing but a Winchester M70 30'06 target rifle and a spotter looking for VC Officers to take out. Lunch with sweaty palm of same kind of folks who'd made it back to the World and were back to using their skills in several overseas locations were always full of didja or dooya remember this or that with too many details for THF. If I heard the saying "Didi Mau" once I heard it a hundred times.

There was another guy down the street couple blocks west of Collector's that also was really bigtime interesting. He was from Northern Ireland and had connections for firearms products from France, Belgium and some other Euro outlets. My Stoeger people in Jersey knew ALL ABOUT him..... and "That's All Folks", as my wife hates it when I take a walk down memory lane. I will say this though I had more friends in the Gun & Sporting Goods business than I ever did anywhere else in my business life, and should have taken the Glock 5 state contract when it was offered, thanks to one of the largest handgun distributors in Texas at Dave's House of Guns in Dallas. Snoozzz Ya Loozzzz is a True Statement.

OH one more non gun memory...1st I have a B in Law who was a dog trainer in the Air Force, who was assigned to guard the back gate of the most famous AFBase in Nam...Da Nang ...and yes the phrase in the movie "Charly Don't Surf" was real, regularly had to "deter" AF people from sneaking back on base after curfew or when they were too drunk or stoned to walk straight. This one AF Captain tried to sneak in, but tried to fight his way in late one night when BinL was alone with his dog during a Shift Change. After getting hit in the face several times with the Captain's Swagger Stick, BIL sicced his dog on the Captain when the Captain reached for his sidearm....the "damage" to the Officer ummm was "substantial", and BIL got "reassigned" to find and chase VC's in new underground tunnel's until he developed "Bad Air" problems from what the VC had left behind to protect them from BIL and his dog. The "Bad Air" problems are slowly doing what they were designed to do. I'll be surprised if he see's Spring Flowers.

Oh one more "funny" about Danang days. My tall skinny frat brother from Denison came ashore with a M14 in one hand over his head & and a manual Typwriter in the other hand, walked up on the beach and said hello to the Navy Nurses and their dates, who were surfing...just like in the movie, frat Brother was the SEABEE's Company Clerk, just like his father had been in WW II invasions.

If your drive will take you through Huntsville I recommend a stop at Able's Outdoors on the northern outskirts of town.

Tommy Z passed away about 4 years ago. Same year as Mr. Carter. Tommy was a dear friend and went to early.

the Spring location on Treschwig has a bunch of mounted animals that are pretty neat…..a roomful of them. And it has a range. Overall Carter’s is a good large store. None of the stores have cheap prices.
