Found some elk.
Saw a big non typical that we couldn't get on. He had a huge 6 or 7 pts on right side and a big polished sword point only on the left side, had to be 38 inches or so long.
Found this young 6 pt with some cows and he offered a good shot, 250 yds on the side hill. Thankfully he went to the top to die, made for an easy retrieval.
The husband and I have gutless down I guess, 35 minutes to get him broken down and the head cut off ready for the ride out.

Nice animal; good job on getting him down and out. Seems like all of mine fall to the very bottom of the very nastiest draw within 5 miles and within 5 minutes of last legal light.

Was informed last week we needed 1 more load of firewood so up to the mountains for 2nd day of elk season to cut a load of wood. Told him take your rifle and orange hat, his reply" I'll get a .22 also for grouse".
Well no elk spotted, lol but grouse in the road on the way out.
After a quick rifling through the backseat for no .22 pistol he grabbed the .40 and went after them.
Neck shot on the young male and we had fried grouse for supper 12 yd shot he said.
Somehow not having the .22 pistol was my fault, figures since he mentioned it in the first place.

Nice. I got my first dusky this weekend as well as my first bull. I was just as excited about the grouse as I was the elk.

Headed up to the ranch the 27th - 31st for deer and elk hunting.
Had a nice cold front push in today and another on the way about Wednesday and then again on the weekend.
Hoping for just a bit of snow and no wind.
Mature bucks should be pre rut about then and staging with doe groups. Always interesting to see what shows up.

Back from the ranch and our deer hunt. We found a couple of good management bucks to get out of the gene pool. My 4x3 has a kicker that usually shows up at regression, he had a decent body size for our non ag deer, about 170 lbs or so. Spouse's 3x3 with an extra brow point was at lest 30 lbs smaller. He had some tooth wear though so we'll see on age from the lab. Our area was mandatory CWD testing so we turned in teeth with the sample for a good age on both bucks.
Spouse had 2 young bull elk come by but he as looking for a cow, go figure.

We had anywhere from 12 -20 deer in the yard every night, a couple of nice young 4pts and 3x4's were working the doe groups.

Just curios but how much wild game to you collect each year? However much it is you are eating some good meals.

Most years we get a couple of deer, a couple of pronghorn - maybe 3 with a doe or 2, and at least 1 or 2 elk, usually cow elk. Some years we draw special tags and add some different meat.
Last year spouse shot a moose, couple of years back I had a bighorn sheep tag.

We get deer and elk licenses every year, pronghorn antelope most years too.
We are about out of moose eligibility, I can get 1 more tag over my lifetime. We are done for sheep in Wyoming.

We also have drawn cow bison 3 times and taken 3 nice cows. Still hoping for a bull bison tag some year.

We have 3 freezers we fill, with just 2 of us now we share quite a bit of meat too and make some sausage. We eat game meat about 5 times a week, beef steaks are a treat for us. Mule deer tenders for supper tonight.

Envy you two on the fun and good eats. Not the work though that goes into the preparations. Hope the steaks are some good ones with all the money you are saving.
