Brown county hunters…..we have seen axis and killed aoudad over the past few years. When we were at the taxidermist in Cross Plains, he said there are herds of aoudad in Callahan and Brown counties but we have never seen in camera. Anyone else seeing these critters around Brown and Callahan ?

I hunt in the Southeast corner of Callahan Country. I have not seen any exotics. Talking with locals a few years back about them was told occasionally something gets out of a high fence but isn’t a surviving, breeding population.
Maybe things have changed.
I personally would like to see something other than deer and hogs, spice it up.

in 15 years of hunting just north of Baird, we got a single lone aoudad on camera. evidently they can range pretty far during their rut. we also saw a javelina off of 283

I have hunted cross plains, cottonwood burket and Coleman for 20+ years and have never seen an exotic on any of those ranches. I will say my nephew saw an Axis run across our north pasture in Burkett. We figured he was a lone soul that got out of a high fence.

My friend and son hunted our place in Coleman County and the friend said he saw what he thought was a red stag or an elk.
After talking with the neighbor he said he had twp on camera.
We didn’t put any cameras out this year?

Not surprised, I know there have been 2 elk seen about 3 miles West or Mangum, Southeast of Cisco. One I saw was a spike the other another guy hunting the place saw it. Those sightings were several years ago but there are a few around. Some of the high fence places that had them the wires were cut in fires to let them out to where they were not burned up.

South Brown County should have some axis roaming around. I see them every now and then on Hwy 377. Someone had the bright idea of trapping axis in McCulloch county and they have reduced the population quite a bit. The freeze killed a lot also. I prefer to hunt axis any day over whitetail. Whitetail is junk meat compared to an axis. I am sure the farmers hate the axis.

I'm in far southern Brown County, low fence, west of 377 and have seen a few Axis on my game cams over the years, but nothing while hunting. Would have to look back at photos for dates, but think it has been at least 4 years since I've gotten one on cam. I've never gotten photos or seen any other free-ranging exotics here.

Had a lease several years back in that area and never saw any Aoudad with my own eyes or on camera. I think the Whitetail were shot out in my specific area too. No shortage of pigs though.
