I have 2 big pecan trees and they are loaded. The problem is a small percentage are opening up and dropping nuts. I have 4 crows that visit every day and hit the tops of the trees knocking off pecans still in the green husk. That I understand but I have a lot of them that are coming down just due to the wind. I am wondering if the drought has caused the tips of the branches to weaken. Some I can just pop open and extract the nuts but others take a little more work. I have hundreds that dried up and dropped off the trees prematurely but have still managed to get about 40 to 50 lbs.

You’re doing better than I have. The trees have dumped the nuts on mine. And, of course, the tree rats also heavily contributed to my loss.

Aphids hammered my trees 5-6 weeks ago and that hurt the finish on the nuts nearly as bad as the drought did. I'll get a few, but I've talked to a couple of large groves around the Colorado river and they've basically lost their entire crop because of the drought.

I am anxious to see how ours did, our place we hunt in Menard is covered in native pecan trees. The deer usually gorge on them and I truly believe the deer meat tastes better.

A few of my trees are dropping nuts still green. Had the aphid problem mentioned above. Honeydew so thick, all the leaves were coated in shiny goo. A lot of nuts dropped prematurely and aren’t any good. But the ones dropping now are mostly ok. Got the pecan weevil worms in many of them because I didn’t know to treat for them.

On the other hand, my hickory tree is dropping a bumper crop of nuts still in the hull. Those hulls seem to dry quickly though and peel off very easily. Got 3 mesh bags full hanging in garage to dry out. Hickory nuts are delicious, but tedious to get at. Worth the effort in my opinion.

Working on bag #3. It will be full in a few days. I also had the aphid problem. It was nasty until the rain. Even though the nuts are dropping green they are meaty. [Linked Image]
