2010 Focus Starting Issues. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't

It went thru a vocational program for the last few months

Replaced everything, just about

Prior to going in, it would sometimes die when slowing for a turn, it would start right back up

I picked it up a month ago with a clean bill of health

I drove it a few days and it started not wanting to start after short trips

It would crank up, drive for 15-20 minutes, kill it, and then it wouldn't start back up for awhile

But not every time

It went back to the vocational program and they couldn't duplicate the program

Released again yesterday

I drove it about 15 miles and the cel came on p0442, the light came on about 10 minutes after fueling up

I killed it and it started right back up

Drove 5 more minutes home and killed it, cleared the code and then no start, tried it for 20 minutes and gave up

Woke up this morning and it fired right up?

Any ideas?

I can't help with the starting issue but if the timing belt has not been replaced then do it. If it goes you will have more then starting issues. I don't remember the years but some Focus's will implode when the belt breaks. It happened to my son's Focus. I think his was a 2008 and had what they call an interference (I believe that is the correct term) engine.

The code has nothing to do with this i would throw that out as being a factor.

Does it crank?

Have they looked at the fuel pump?

Sounds like fuel pump getting ready to die to me as well. Recently had it on a Tahoe. When it would cool off it would start and run until it was killed again. Just a swinging guess for you but that was my issue.

It will turn over, but won't start

Has a new fuel pump, done by vocation
You can hear it start when you turn the key on

When it starts, it runs good

I can drive it for miles and miles with no issue

Once I kill it, it's a 50/50 chance on whether it will start back up

If it doesn't start back up, wait a good while(hour or 3) and it starts right back up and is good to go

Just a guess, I think you might have a heat sink problem, or loose connection somewhere. The time to trouble shoot would be when it doesn't start. Check fuel pressure with a fuel pressure gauge, if that checks out pull a plug wire and see if you have spark. Whichever one you have problems with you'll have to trace back till you find the problem. Not gonna be fun electrical problems never are. I think that a wire or connections are over heating, causing the problem.

You may want to check the fuel pump relay. Try putting in a different relay when it does not want to start.

Should be at least 3 identical ones in that box. Just switch them out.

Call a Ford House Mechanic. They will tell you what you are looking for. They only built a few hundred thousand of um and some would have Your problem.

I tried to get it to not start today, but the sucker worked fine

I'll check the relays as soon as I can get a no start again

I'm not sure how to check fuel pressure on it

Do you have access to a scanner?

I’m betting you have a bad sensor or ground.

I’d be looking at all the sensors that monitor temperature. I’d start with intake air temp, I’d also look at the MAP or MAF.

Feel free to PM me

I've got a cheap obd tool, not a real scanner

Only code it has ever thrown was the p0442, evaporative emission leak

This is probably not the cause

I've not got it into the no start mode again.

I drove it to the school just now and when I got back(20 minutes) I pulled the key out and it was quite hot. Like it had been laying in the sun for awhile

The vocational program did replace the ignition switch housing, but not the switch itself

Alright, its been at the mechanic shop for the last week

They couldn't duplicate the issue and I picked it up today

Drove it home, no problem. Killed it and started right back up several times

45 minutes later my daughter tries to start it and it just spins over

I go outside and as she's backing out our other car it fires up and I kill it and restart it a few times

I don't know if it was just the right time for it to start. But I wiggled the key a lot. Did the unlock with the key and door lock spin and got the 'to stop alarm start car' light to flash. I turned the key then and it just soun over

I jiggled the key in the ignition and it cranked up when she backed out

Very odd issue
