So, I had one contractor put a gutter on one side of the ranch barn and another contractor (mainly interior bang) connect it to a pvc under the drive. 'Convoluted mess of joints, caulk, etc. Leaks like a sieve. I'm determined to put a rain barrel under the down spout and just run a hose coming off the barrel into and through the pvc under the road. The, I assume, commercial downspout measures 3&1/2" by 4. Where can I go to buy joints to put on the downspout to angle it to the rain barrel? There ain't squat at Home Depot and I haven't had much better success online. Any help is appreciated. up (The good news is, it never rains all that much out there. grin)

That’s not much water. I had 325 gallons on hand and would burn through that in a few days watering flowerbeds and a small garden.

Algae will grow in those white/clear totes. Need a container that does not let any light in if you want drinkable water.

All you need is 3-5 mil plastic wrapped over it, no sun light = no algae

Wow those are some great prices. I was seeing anywhere between $250-$400 on the 250 gallon IBC tanks. I’ve been looking for these for a while. Just wrap them in some black plastic and you’re good to go like Wade said. Think Chickenman has that setup.

How about black spray paint?

If you’re not drinking it who cares?

Black, brown, dark green or blue. Any color light is limited by.

We recently got this for my water well project. Will store water in it for irrigation.

Think that might seep through the plastic.

I’m using mine for gardening but in the event of a disaster we might need to drink it. I know I’d have to run it through a purifier but still don’t want any spray paint in it lol.

I don’t think paint would seep through the plastic. I’ve seen it done before, it just stick well. So eventually starts peeling off.

I used PVC to connect to the gutter. I could have done it differently and might change it but it works. 2" of rain fills it. 3 filters with one being a single flush. Surprisingly, the water is clean and clear.

You always have the water heater and toilet bowls for back up hydro...

Here you go - https://www.kmsheetmetal.com/elbows-for-downspouts/ I've used KMS for years and love them. Cheaper than me fabricating my own conductor heads when I do commercial roofing.

Also, you need to research about these rain barrels sir. It's common for about 1/8" inch of rain to fall each hour during a moderate rainstorm. That means that a 500 square foot roof can fill a properly installed 50-gallon rain barrel in about one hour. But you know Texas. We'll get 1.25" in 30 minutes. I highly recommend a larger barrel with a 1/2 horse pump.

^^^Thank you sir! Exactly what I was looking for.

I hear you about the size barrel. I'm just having a hard time believing I'll ever have a decent rain again out here right now. Hopefully I'll be upgrading soon. up

On your current down pipe, drill out the rivets near the bottom and remove the square to round piece and cut it loose from the round PVC. Then cut the down spout at the correct height and reinstall the square to round piece (turned 90°) and use screws or pop rivets to attach to the down spout. Then make your connection from the PVC to your rain barrel.

Amazon sells black or green covers that fit over the totes.

You’d be surprised at how much water you can get depending on roof dimensions. They have a calculator on this page, just plug in roof dimensions and rainfall.
