Shooting fire formed nosler brass j What is the neck inside diameter after sizing? Should be looking for about 0.002” - 0.003” of neck tension i.e. inside diameter of 0.281” - 0.282”. Also check the measurement after it sits for a few days after sizing. Some brass will spring back a bit. Annealing helps eliminate that issue.

I'm between a .315 and .316 and want opinions. What is this measurement? I'd recommend using a FL neck bushing, not just a neck sizing die. If you have a loaded round, I typically go .003" or .004" less than loaded round neck diameter. I've sized brass to .001" and .002" neck tension, and you will get some brass cases that have too little neck tension, or varying neck tensions. I like .003" to .004" (or more) for any ammo I will be hunting or competition ammo.

I'm between a .315 and .316 and want opinions. What is this measurement? …. Chad, that is the outside neck diameter. Redding offers interchangeable bushings even on full length sizing dies to adjust neck tension. OP, it is hard for others to give a specific answer because neck wall thicknesses vary. Most are about 0.015” on each side, but can be less or more. Also, the type of resizing lube can effect the final outcome. 0.281” + 0.030” = 0.311” for outside neck diameter, if the brass has neck wall thickness of 0.015”. Back when I shot a lot of 7 WSM, 0.311” and 0.312” were the bushings I used most depending on the batch of brass. But you have to measure the inside neck diameter using the prongs on the top side of calipers of the brass you are using. The answer is in your hands, just take the measurement of inside diameter. fwiw - I moved away from bushing dies and now mostly use Forster dies and some Reddings without bushings. Forsters consistently give me the least runout though.

Ok. So how do you calculate the proper neck bushing size to size the brass, by measuring a sized case? That seems backwards to me.

.314 is the bushing I use.
I do it like Chad...measure a loaded round and then I subtract .001 or .002 depending on what I am trying to accomplish. I'm not a huge neck tension guy like some on here are...I am definitely on the light side, as you can tell Chad is subtracting .003-.004.

Measure the O.D. of the neck, of five loaded rounds.
Almost always I subtract .002" for bolt action rifle rounds.

To do this right its:
Bullet diameter + thickness of your case mouth = xxx Then for your bushing selection you subtract .002 from your total.
I usually like to buy the bushings that are .001, .002, .003 smaller than a bullet diameter plus the total case thickness.
Being sized is not a good indicator for your bushing sizes because you can distort the diameter of the bullet during seating.
Asking this and not measuring is useless because even between lots of the same brand brass the neck thickness can vary some. Different brands of brass will vary a huge amount.
This is part of my reason to neck turn. That way all brass is the same.

This is exactly why I outsource!!! Makes my head hurt. Take my money, test to 1000 yards, see in next year if barrels speeds up.
