struck out early this morning, a few birds being seen, mostly super high flying whitewings. some hunters did better than others though. if you know of a place with crops or water, covet it.

Sorry to hear that. All the whitewings are in my backyard in Dallas right now. Have about 20 roosting in my tree just about 20 feet from me now. They outnumber the mourning dove now here. Hopefully we'll have better luck this afternoon when I head out.

hmmm.....with all the shooting around my house I thought it must have been good. Our 3 tanks are low, but they still have water. I'll be sitting on mine about 4:00 out 1044.

went back out at 3pm yester day. did alot better but still nothing to write home about. me and a buddy got 4 birds each, with 2 wounded but not retrieved and about 3 or 4 missed but within easy kill range. all birds stopped flying by around 5:30. gonna try it again this afternoon. high flyers were once again a problem.

went out at 3, was almost 5 before i saw a bird. missed some easy shots, saw about 25 birds. was able to bag 5, 1 whitewing and the rest mourning. heard alot of shooting but figured it was high flying whitewing. i would say hunting is below average for opening weekend. any one else do any hunting near san antonio?

Thanks for the report! Hunted dove around SA from 1978-1987 ! Lawn chair at the stock tank was the ticket !

Man, it is getting to the point where you need to hunt at least 50 miles from a big town to do any good. Birds have everything they need here in SA. Water and people to feed them. What a life. We hunted for years around Boerne and could kill a limit by throwing rocks and for the past five years we can't buy a bird. If we see them they are at 10,000 on oxygen going mach 2 with a 2ft flame out their cloacas.

We bagged a few out west and things were just getting good. Did not notice ANY shots this year from the adjacent fields and now I know why. The POLICE were dispatched to our location and asked us to leave (which we did immediately) because we were in the city limits. The zoning changed since last year and we lost our dove spot. Went to our backup place and it started raining but we enjoyed the day. Oh yeah, forgot to mention I sat down about three feet away from a big rattler. No snake bite and no citation so I guess it was a good day. Sure beats work!!!

I hunted just outside of New Braunfels opening afternoon, and did very well, I shot my limit in 35 minutes with 30 shells. I hunted my budys place, and the birds were thick and low, then I was back to public lands, and the harvest went way, way down.

I hunted south of NB yesterday afternoon over a water hole. Killed three, shot at 6 or 7, saw maybe a limit. Pretty slow.

Howdy neighbor.

3 of us limited out Friday evening, but it's been the usual slow after that. The public hunting land off of Green Valley road actually backs up to our backyard (wife and I live in an old rent house in the back of her G-parents 100 acres off 1044). I've been hearing shots consistantly for the last 3 days....makes me wonder if it's really dove their shooting at...lol.

i hunt out at green valley, yeah, its dove, but you'd need anti-aircraft ordninace to hit them. the hunting ranges from fair to poor. but i can't blame it all on the birds, i miss my fair share of gimme's too.

Went out to my backup spot in the middle of the afternoon yesterday and easily shot my 15 birds. Good action and hundreds of doves. Only problem, we have had a ton of rain and some of the desert roads are flooded out. I did not see another hunter out there.

chad,
are you originally from the san antonio area or did you move here from somewhere else?
