Don't forget to put out oyster shell for the craw and
shell production. I've also used the old roasted crushed
up shells

Seems raising chickens isn't much different that raising Zucchini squash. It doesn't take long before you're looking for neighbors with open windows in their vehicles. They step in and find a bag of squash in the seat.

Washing them removes a natural protective layer. Once they’re washed, they need to be refrigerated.

If you don't wash them, they can sit on your counter about 2 weeks. I always wash mine and put them in the refrigerator. I think they can last as long as 3 months in the frig. Mine are never in there over a week and I use a rotation system - oldest eggs in front.

Breakfast this AM and a few shots of the coop.

This crazy hen has been setting on eggs over a month (our rooster Handsome was killed a few years ago, so the eggs are unfertilized). I've pushed her out of the box and collected all the eggs 3 or 4 times. I won't eat the eggs she is sitting on because I don't know how old they are, so they get fed to our nightly visitors. We have 4 red foxes, a few raccoons and a possum who get meals pretty regularly around here.

6 hens in the back yard. With a coop built from an old shed on the side of a metal building. 1/3 acre back yard for getting outside, chain link fence. Neighbors get any extra eggs and take care of them when we are gone. Let them out every morning close coop door when they go to roost. Pics of grey fox, raccoons, opossum, red fox and few coyotes within 15 yards of the fence plus lots of hawks and owls around. Sofar we have been lucky over 2 years still have 6 hens.

Enjoy their eggs often, nothing special, quick breakfast this morning. Scrambled toth onions, pepper, and pomento and cheese with venison sausage.... not bad for sore.

Edit to add the coop fence is 2X4 welded mesh fence, the only animals we have seen trying to get in were 2 American bulldogs about 4am one morning had to replace a section of the fence on the bottom as they had broken enough wires several raccoons could have walked in at the same time. My old Brittany when he was still alive would pee along the back fence and corners of the coop, telling the predators a dog owned those chickens and he did like eggs preferably scrambled.

With the snake problems this year an additional layer of hardware mesh is going to be added fully to the coop to hopefully keep them out.

My dad is from Lake Charles, so I've spent a lot of time in Louisiana throughout my life. I love boudin, crawfish, etouffee, and all things cajun.

I may be interested in adding a few hens to the flock. Shoot me a PM if you decide to get rid of some of them. Or do y'all plan on eating them?

I don't eat them that often but they are always large brown eggs from our birds that we let out during the day to tear up the bugs. Makes the egg yolks so much darker colored and better when you like em sunny side up like i do.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

Breakfast today - layered - thick sauteed tomato slice, thin slice ham, sauteed spinach, Havarti cheese, ham, egg over-easy. Had my photographer Elizabeth out on the water with me during the morning paddle. Haven't seen her photos from this AM yet.
