I'm a big fan of Shun kitchen knives... well, my sister is remodeling her kitchen, finally building her dream kitchen. She's a fantastic chef and they've dealt with lower end/cheap kitchen knives forever. She means the world to me and I'd really like to surprise her with a good knife set when she finishes her remodel.

Just wanted to see if any of you have a hookup or connection on Shun knives? I'd like to at least get her the starter set and while they are very pricey, but I know they'll appreciate them.

Thanks for any help, and hope you all have a great 4th!

How much you looking to spend? Any other brands you’d consider? Also I had a few sets and pretty much just use a chefs knife all the time. Would one sweet knife be an option?

Yeah tell me more. I want to spoil them with a knife that they will use often. Vegetables, seafood, some meats.

There’s an an annual sale on blemished knives in November. I have bought 6-7 Shun Premier knives via this sale. I have never even been able to tell what the difference is except that Shun etches a tiny number code indicating that they are not eligible for warranty. Half off retail and the quality is superb.

I would not buy a set of it were me. I would get a nice chef knife, and at least a pairing knife to start. You can do just about anything with those. I also use shun knives in my kitchen. Would go with anything else.

I have 3 different sizes of Shun Premier chef's knives...so you he could get Shun chef's knives. Also, you own and use Shun, yet you "would go with anything else"? I'm not following your post at all.

Time to step up. Go buy a few different Henckels and be done with it.

I've had a Henckels 12' Chefs knife for 25 years.

I was under the impression that Shun was a step up from Henckel.

Either way y’all need to let this thread die! You got my dumb [censored] looking at $1000 knife sets that I don’t need.

Shun is WAY better than Zwilling Henckels. Henckels is fine- I actually had a full set years ago. Shun is much sharper though and better handles.

Wouldn’t. Use anything else, it was a typo. And yes that’s all I have and use. But I still would never buy a knife set. Unless you want to blow money or are actually going to use all the knives in the set.

They are a better knife. And you can get plenty of their knives and not spend 1k. Don’t buy a set.

Shun isn’t better than a good henkels it’s just different. Japanese knives are harder and can get sharper. Great for slicing thru fresh fish/ veggies like a razor new out the box. But they are harder to sharpen and usually brittle and thin. Good euro knife will be easier to sharpen and won’t chip when you hit a chicken bone and have some heft which is nice when slicing. Sounds like you need one of each type and let her decide
