We are looking to build some type of VRBO on our property.

Anyone else have experience with it and have some suggestions?

We have 16 acres with a pond, really pretty property. Some concerns we have are liability and if we would be able to keep it rented out at least regularly as we would have to finance it.

We are located outside of Abilene and get a lot of visitors for horse related events so we thought having accommodations for horses would be a plus.

We want to build something unique, possibly out of an old silo.

Thanks in advance..

True on the insurance. When I switched our places in Rockport from long term rentals to vacation rentals, there was a significant increase. I also upped my liability coverage by quite a bit.

I had vacation rentals for years. Look at the competition in the area amd build something that can maintain rentals in both good and bad markets.

I think it is a great idea and I would rent from you since I visit Abilene area fairly often.

Absolutely!

I'm a Realtor and have listed, sold, etc. properties all around Lake Fork for years. That was after building homes there for many years before. It is extremely seasonal.

I know folks with VRBO/AirB&B properties. I would not want one that could experience off seasons.

If I could turn the clock back I would have a few, but in some tourist type place with no lag times.

we owned a ranch a few years back and had a guest house already on the property that we used as a bed and breakfast.

overall it was a good experience - made extra income - it does tie you down somewhat to having to be there when guest are there - I handled the bookings and wife handled the breakfast, etc. It is a little strange at first to have strangers on your property but overall we never had any real issues - good luck to you

We see many of them through work, banks do lend on them and there is money to be made. If it’s something you think is feasible for you to operate I would do it.

I watch "Barn Wood Builders" and have seen some rally nice wood cabins that I would love to live in. If this is an option I think they now sell them here in Texas. I stay at airbnb's a lot and have only had one bad experience so if you do your homework it could be a good thing to do. Good luck.
