Started at about 10 yards and increased to 20 as they were running. I killed 3 but only have pics of the 2. Took 5 shots total, first shot was a hit, then 2 misses, then started paying attention to my sights again and made 2 more hits lol. About 2 seconds from first shot to the last. Tons of fun

So for 40 S&W, would you recommend 180, 165, or 155 for short range shooting/finishing shots? I carry 155 grain Underwood hollowpoints in my 4006 but haven't used them on hogs yet. My 4006 is sighted in with 165 grain, I'm guessing the officer who had it was using 165 grain gold dot or HSTs which is what I have on hand for self defense. It's probably the most accurate handgun I own and the one that cost the least.

I like the 180s generally, but the next batch I load will be 155s because that's what I have. It will be my first batch of full power 155s, should go over 1300 fps. I think I will like them too. If I get a chance to shoot some pigs with the 155s I will report back

So you are shooting a .40 S&W with 180 XTPs at 1180 fps out of what appears to be a short barreled Springfield XDM?
That is a hot load, considering you are getting 10mm ballistics out of a compact .40. What powder are you using?

Yes I am. The barrel is 3.8 so basically 4". I use a hodgdon book load of longshot, about a tenth under max. The book shows 1150 out of a 4" gun and in my 4" 40 it did pretty much exactly that. This 3.8 just seems to be a fast barrel. The same load gave me 1050 from a 3" xd sub compact and 1225 out of a 5 inch 1911 and a 5.25 xdm. If you are wanting a 40 to be all it can be, longshot is a good powder for it. I don't shoot it for target shooting and such though lol, I use lighter loads for that
The lucky Gunner ammo test using a 4 inch Glock and Hornady 180 grain 10mm got about the same velocity that I am getting from a 4 inch 40.

There is a guy on another forum that is a retired Game Warden, and has taken deer with both the .40 and the 10mm. He said the only difference between the two on deer is the tree behind the deer will be deader with the 10mm I carry a .40 every day (Glock 22 Gen 4) and shoot it about once a week with handloads of 180 Grain Berry's FP with WSF for about 1000 fps (factory 180 is about 950). I have to try the Longshot powder if you are getting those kind of velocities, thanks for sharing.

I think you will like it. It gives some of the higher velocities in 9mm and 45 too, if you load for them

Yeah I have looked at the velocities for the 9 and 45 at hodgdonreloading.com, and with Longshot you can basically get +P velocities at non +P pressures.
I have a pound of Longshot but have only loaded 3 and 3.5 Inch 12 Gauge Buckshot rounds with it so far. I have noticed it is noticeably louder than most other shotshell powders like Blue Dot, maybe it should be called LoudShot lol.
