Pack it in your checked bag and you’ll be fine.

make sure you do not even have a magazine in your carry on. My FIL did it a few years ago and the TSA kind of gets excited.

That links says this: "Bringing an unloaded firearm with accessible ammunition to the security checkpoint carries the same civil penalty/fine as bringing a loaded firearm to the checkpoint. You may find information on civil penalties at the Civil Enforcement page."How do you transport your ammo? If you check a locked pistol case with an unloaded gun do you put your ammo in separate check baggage? I'm assuming you don't carry the ammo onto the plane in carry on luggage?

Ammo in a separate checked bag. Ammo must be in a factory box. Make sure to declare the gun when you check it or you will be in trouble. I fly with the gun and buy ammo when I get there.

Just show your LTC and carry it on the plane with you. That's how it should be. Good Luck!

You can check up to 11 lbs. Of ammo. Must be in mfg. Packaging or approved storage ammo box. Gun must be unloaded and in locked hard sided case and declared upon check in. At check in you'll have to sign doc stating gun is unloaded. This doc travels with gun. Once declared they take you to separate area, TSA inspects gun and relocked in case. You pick gun up at your final destination. EZ to do done it lots of times.

Unless something changed in the last year, ammo does not need to be in a separate checked bag. I always have factory-boxed ammo in the same case that my gun is in. It's an easy process to fly with a gun and ammo. Just allow yourself extra time for the check in process.

Just signed the form, stuck in my locked checked bag, and I was good to go.

yeah, I have flown with rifle and ammo in same case, checked of course. a handgun case that is to be carried on would need to have the ammo checked in a piece of luggage, but if you plan to check the gun case, the ammo can ride with. Declare the weapon at the ticket counter, and they will take it from there. You don't go through security with a weapon and ammo, but could go with an unloaded weapon as long as it is declared.

The TSA guy completely freaked out and spent a good 10 minutes digging through my backpack until he finally found the magazine. I now have a separate hunting backpack.
Thanks, Rich

Check your airline. Their policies are slightly different. Southwest is good with 2 boxes of 12 gauge in the same case as the gun.
They are serious about the packaging. Absolutely no ammo in mags, but the flimsy cardboard box in came in is fine.
Also, this is the one time they do not want a TSA lock. They will ask you to verify that no-one else has a key.
If the case has multiple padlock holes, hey want a lock on each.
We all need to practice Whoa more.
