For all my Texas Buds, this is a Snowy Owl that came to visit me several mornings while I was feeding the horses. We moved to Montana last year and we are experiencing a wide variety of wildlife not normally seen in Texas. This owl is very rare to see in the United States, even the folks here in Montana say this is a rare opportunity to get picture or two! Beautiful predator! Just wanted to share, most Texans have never seen one.

I had the pleasure of seeing a Snowy Owl when I lived in the Endless Mountain region of Pennsylvania.
I was hunting the flintlock deer season in the late afternoon during the first week of January. He came swooping in just a few feet off the ground then landed in a hemlock tree right above me. Watched him for several minutes before he flew off. They’re beautiful owls. They aren’t native to Pennsylvania but occasionally come down during Arctic cold fronts.

This is a female, the males are more solid white. We have both hanging around but I haven't seen either one of them for a little over a week now. I suppose they have returned to the frozen tundra. We have Great Horned Owls, Bald and Golden Eagles surrounding us. I never realized the wingspan of a Bald Eagle until we had one on our property! These are amazing birds. We are in an area that bears are not real common, or at least within five miles. I know we have a big cat walking around our house at night, I'm guessing a mountain lion by looking at the tracks. It's a new adventure for sure, we lived in North Texas most of our lives.

The snowy owl that I saw was very white and large. Bald eagles were very common as were black bears. Golden eagles migrated through in the spring but were usually too high up to appreciate their size. The thickness of the beak and feet of mature bald eagles is very impressive.
I’ve never been to Montana but the pics you posted look amazing.

Great pics! I have actually seen one mounted in person.... grin.... a replica made from Frank Newmyer who is probably the best bird taxidermist in the world. He raise chickens to get the feathers off of to make his replicas. Seen one of his Bald Eagle replicas also.
