I like Wise and Mountain House. I get the entrée only buckets with Wise. The multi day supply ones what have all the little extras aren't the best bang for your buck.

Here’s what I’ve done for cheap…
I just don’t see any reason to pay a lot for a survival type situation food
20 lbs white rice, 20 lbs red beans, 10 gallons of water
I’ve got access to thousands of pigs…
All for under $20

Many of those have textured vegetable protein (TVP). Just look at the label and it will tell you. I went with Ready Hour because they have actual freeze dried beef and chicken. They also have the meals, 3 or 6 month supply kits, water, salt, desserts, even gear.

All for under $20 Same, I do not buy the pre packaged meals. I buy bulk rice and beans from SAMs and package it myself in Mylar bags with O2 absorbers in 5 gallon buckets. I have enough food for my family to last us a good long while. I also make my own MRE’s in case we have to leave our house to come back later for the rest of the food.

That is the correct way to do it. I have 10 total, 5 gallon buckets of rice, beans and elbow macaroni that are stored that way. The mylar storage kits with bags and absorbers are cheap on eBay. Fill, vacuum and then seal. Rice will get buggy in just a few years without being sealed and air free. All in was about 220 bucks.

All for under $20 You might want to add in some basic spices, if nothing else, at least salt and pepper.

This is who I got mine from. I've tried a few of'em and they're pretty good. Plus, I have about six months, of Air Force survival rations. And they are dang good .

Whatever you decide on buy a small amount and taste it before stocking up. Some of the stuff that is widely promoted is just nasty and barely edible. We settled on mountain house. Ordered it from Costco. It tastes good to everyone in our family and we have a couple picky eaters. We have gone through a few boxes of it just because we didn’t feel like cooking or going and getting something. It is that decent. We have enough where our family of four could eat nothing but it for six months.

Store a good bit more water than you think you can get by with. Surface water can be contaminated easily
Extra precautionary food storage is wise with the vacuum packages and mylar bags etc. I'd bought a goodly amount of rice and beans some years ago, and just put it in buckets with no other preparation and it spoiled in about a year and a half. Kinda halfway fermented and stinky and not usable.

Sound like some here need to learn how to make Pemmican, the ultimate survival food that has helped humans survive for thousands of years, Might give you a reason to shoot an extra doe next year.

Anybody canning meat such as hogs, deer, fish? Will last several years and is great. A large pressure cooker and jars will do the job. I haven't done any in a while but I guess it may be time to get started.

I go through about 20days worth freeze dried and dehydrated a year. Last season I think I went through 32.
Any way they all have about same storage time if they are freeze dried. Dehydrated doesn’t have as long of a self life but you can make it your own and freeze it, which greatly extends it a couple years.
I not buying something that taste like crap, I pay a little more for something that not solid sodium.
Some of my favorite Brands Peak refuel Mtn house Off grid food Stowaway gourmet
Then on dehydrated I like Hawk vittles
Note that instant potato’s can increase calorie count and us easy to store also

Another thing to consider is the amount of energy/fuel it takes to prepare your foods. Freeze dried meals require you to bring water to a boil. Rice and beans require sustained heat for quite a while. If your power is out and its cold, freeze dried could be a pain, while rice and bean might not be possible without planning ahead. I've made sure to have some ready to eat foods, MREs, etc. They are often more expensive and don't taste as good, but after the Big Freeze, I wanted to make sure to have some stuff to get us through the worst of it after a natural disaster, without having to spend an inordinate amount of time trying to heat water.
