My Remington 700 has rust on the back of the bolt and maybe inside the bolt. I haven't used it in awhile and I've never seen this before. Is there something that I can soak the bolt in that will remove the rust? I've tried Rem Oil, but that's not working.

The old standby is Naval Jelly, but it may remove the black coating on the bolt shroud.

Try Evapo-Rust. It’s cheap, easy, non toxic, and reusable. Just throw your object in a container, pour in Evapo-Rust until submerged, wait 1-12 hours checking periodically (depending on amount of rust), hit it with a nylon brush, rinse with water and dry. Pour the Evapo-Rust back in its container. I just bought some recently, and was skeptical, but it has worked as advertised. I don’t know what kind of sorcery they use to make that stuff, but I’m impressed. Here is a shell holder I did the other day. I think I soaked it for three hours, along with some other stuff.

Most of the chemical rust removers will also cause hydrogen embrittlement which causes metal to fail under stress. Mechanical removal along with oil to prevent future rusting is your best bet.

Very fine steel wool is what the old timers taught me. Something along the line of 0000 that feels more like cloth.

50/50 mix of ATF and acetone ... soak it for a while then use copper chore boy gently. After that 0000 steel wool soaked in oil. For rust on plated parts like chrome or zinc, use a hydrogen peroxide bath.
Pass the gravy.

Thank you for so many suggestions. I'm probably going to try every one of them. The more that I look at my guns, the more rust that I'm finding. This East Texas humidity is becoming a challenge to deal with!!!!

I run a dehumidifier in my gun room and use the rechargeable silica boxes in the safe. East Texas humidity is like a rain forest.
One shot is all it should take.

Will Evapo-rust take the bluing off with the rust?

Around 10 years ago the bolt knob on a 700 ADL rusted. I bought a Birchwood-Casey reblueing kit, stripped the blueing and rust from the knob then cold blued it. Applied Breakfree CLP a couple of times over the next week. It hasn’t rusted yet.
Don’t roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

I bought some of this a short time ago and it works great. I also use a strand of it around the bore brush for a little extra cleaning inside.
