Guy should do some serious time. A lot of effort and manpower went into investigating this hoax. A ton of taxpayer money.

I'm real curious about sentencing now that the sun is shining on this thing.
Apparently he won't be back in court again until January 27 to even determine a sentencing date.

But it's Illinois- Probation would presumed for a 1st offense instead, BUT....

2nd time lying to police (a Prior in California?, plus he sent that fake hate letter to start this instance), so possible could get some jail time for perjury. He created massive trouble and expense out of thin air. Perjury, even if acquitted, can be addressed with it's own trial as a separate offense when discovered. Fortunately, they could just roll it in to sentencing for his other guilty offenses.

Judge's temperament and discretion to include perjury by Smollett in sentencing- This little dude took his time and lied throughout his testimony, right there in the judge's presence, inviting extra loving attention to the idea of incarceration. Hopefully he comes out on the maximum side of whatever the range of prison sentencing options. With a little luck, he'll discover humility in prison too.

Well it seems all the media and a vast amount of the US population considered it a hate crime, I'm not sure that the fact that it was a complete hoax should change that. We've seen in the past where false accusations and lie's ended up. Look at the Tawanna Brawley case, even worse was the Emmit Till case, that young man was hung for a crime he didn't do.

There is more demand for hate crimes than there is supply so they have to manufacture it themselves.
