I’ve been listening to quite a few audio books and really enjoy it especially on long drives to the lease. I enjoy American history, Indian history, mostly history and non fiction not into fantasies or anything like that. Recently I’ve listened to Empire of the summer moon, undaunted courage about Lewis and Clark, Bury my heart at wounded knee, The journey of Crazy Horse, and Sitting Bull biography.

Any must read American history, Texas history, Native American history books I should check out next?

Sapper, I'm an audiobook addict. Are you downloading them free from your local library? My local library has thousands of titles available and will also add new titles upon request.

Here are a few I really enjoyed.

Erebus by Michael Palin.

Quote
The story of the ship Erebus from its construction as a bomb vessel in 1826 through the flagship years of James Clark Ross's Antarctic expedition and finally to Sir John Franklin's quest for a route through the Northwest Passage, where the ship disappeared. It was rediscovered under the arctic waters in 2014.

The Splendid and the Vile by Erik Larson.

Quote
A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz.

The Lost Airman by Peter Stevens.

Quote
A True Story of Escape from Nazi Occupied France.

The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson.

Quote
The true story of the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago and the cunning serial killer who used the magic and majesty of the fair to lure his victims to their death.

Shattered Sword by Jonathan Parshall.

Quote
The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway

I know you're mostly into non-fiction, but you really ought to try the really good fiction stuff below.

Thirteen Moons by Charles Frazier.

Quote
A novel set in nineteenth-century America against the background of Indian cultures and pioneers, the protagonist (a 12 year old boy) is given a horse, a key, and a map, and sent alone into the Indian Nation to run a trading post as a bound boy.

And a final suggestion for very enjoyable Cop/Who-Done-It fiction. Give the Virgil Flowers Series a try. The author is John Sanford. There are twelve books in the series. They are really good, with bits of humor thrown in. I bet you get hooked with the first book.

If you can't laugh at yourself, give me a call. I'll gladly laugh at you.

"I keep trying to see Nancy Pelosi's and Chuck Schumer's point of view,
but I can't seem to get my head that far up my [censored]." Senator John Kennedy, Louisiana

Indian Depredations in Texas. My great grandfather is mentioned in that book

Edit: I don't believe it's available in audio.

I like Erik Larsen, too. The Splendid and the Vile was great. I just finished Isaac's Storm, by him about the Galveston hurricane, which was very good.

Ridgeline by Michael Punke is good.

We've discovered some historical podcasts that are awesome. Recommend checking out the "Infamous America" podcasts which you can listen to on the way to the lease.

I know you said books but there are also some good historical NON-FICTION podcasts out there.

Right now I am listening to a Podcast called, Our Thing, its has the mobster Sammy the Bull on it and it talks about his life in the mob.

Borderlands is another good Podcast about the Sheriff out in Presidio County from the 90's. Then Tom Brown's Body another Texas Monthly piece that was pretty good.

Most local libraries have an audiobook app and you can "check out" audio books through the app for free. There are 3 or 4 main apps, but different libraries use different apps.

Some great recommendations above, but here are some others you might want to check out if you like history:

A Terrible Glory, Custer and the Little Bighorn-James Donovan
The Texas Rangers, Wearing the Cinco Peso 1821-1900-Mike Cox
The Liberation Trilogy (#1 An Army at Dawn, #2 The Day of Battle, and #3 The Guns at Last Light)-Rick Atkinson. Best and most comprehensive books I have ever read regarding the United States in the European/North African theatre of WW2.

What I learned about audio books is that first you find the book you like and then find you find a good narrator for the book. Makes a big difference.
