I am gathering up several Browning .22 rifles for grand kids. Will be Christmas presents around age 9 (+or- depending on the kid).

I would like to mark the stock with the child's name and "From Pawpaw". I'm thinking wood burning? Some of the stocks may require refinishing if they are high gloss now.

Affecting the value is not a concern. If one of these kids is a big enough turd to sell a rifle gifted by Pawpaw, I could care less how much they get for it.

Do any of you know of a source for having this done? My artistic ability is somewhat lacking.

God is so good to me.

Great idea
Very thoughtful and generous

Check with one of those crafty craft stores
like michaels or something
They've likely got a regular customer that is a
whiz at that

Laser burned would be the way to do it....but honesty....why deface such nice firearms.

Surely if your Grandkids have been raised right....by the time they are old enough to receive the gift, they will already have an affection for 'PawPaw' that will carry on through their lives. They will remember and cherish the thoughtful gift without having it blazened on the rifle.

But if you just have to do it...find someone who can Laser transfer whatever you want to put on it.

Lady at work has a laser thingy that does this. I just had her do a cutting board and some weird cheese knives for me with my last name for my wife. I gave her an inexpensive pistol to engrave as well but that hasn't come back yet. If you are not interested in this avenue, a craft show might be better than Michael's. I went to one with my wife and MIL once and there was some woodworking tables. PM me if you want the gals info.

I wouldn’t want anything like that on the stock of my rifle. I know which firearms my papaw gave me without having something cheesy on the stock.

Rethink this a bit, if you're really set on marking up a fine rifle. It's going to be theirs, so leave PaPa off of it. They'll know you gave it to them. A nice rifle like that, if you want to make it special take it to Ident Marking in Rockwall. (They did my SBR) Have the Book, Chapter & verse of a scripture engraved somewhere on the receiver or barrel. A different one for each grand child, a verse that you pick for them that you feel has a connection between the two of you.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

BigRon, contact Dan Poston: DPoston401@aol.com. I've seen his work and talked to him about doing some work for me while I was at a gun show a couple of weeks ago. His work is top quality.

I would engrave them under the forearm if possible.

I don't do nothing but work and run my mouth. I just know folks who do stuff.

I don’t know anyone that does it but my first 22 was given to me by my grandfather in 1979 and he had the date and his name engraved on it by hand back then. It’s not perfect but that’s the one gun I’d never sell if hell froze over and humanity’s fate depended on it. I pull it out on occasion just to look at it and his name so I think what your doing will be well appreciated decades from now. Sometimes it’s the smallest of things that at the time seem so insignificant but later on mean so much. We killed a ton of squirrels with that gun right in the middle of where bois d’ arc lake is now. We lost the property but I still have the gun,,

Best answer.

Just image them as adults when someone notices their rifle was engraved by "papaw".

Lot of negative responses on here, I think that if this is what you want to do go for it. I wish I had one that said from "Paw Paw" on it and I am 65. Not only would I be proud to show it to adult hunters, it would be a great conversation piece. If I had any grandkids I would do the same. Don't listen to the nay sayers, find someone and get it done.

I loved my PaPa and was proud of him, can't imagine being embarrassed by that as adult.

Preach on brother, mine says Pa 1979 on both sides on the stock and it’s the gun I’m most proud of yet one of the cheapest.

Might I suggest personalizing a very nice skinning or pocket knife as an alternative in creating a heirloom that could easily last for several generations.

I cannot bring myself to deface a firearm BUT it's not my firearm and the OP wasn't asking what we thought of it.

He wanted to know if anyone knew who might be able to deface it for him.

Pass the gravy.

House of blades does laser engraving on the stock. I have had several Henry rifles done by them for charity auctions. They do a great job.
