They say. (Idk who they are) that some people are genetically more likely to become alcoholics. My brother is. (The recovered kind) he has an addictive personality with anything. Totally different than I. He can’t dabble in anything it’s all in. Same way with booze.

I believe it means to approach or treat as a disease. Not just dry someone out for awhile and consider them cured.

“The modern disease theory of alcoholism states that problem drinking is sometimes caused by a disease of the brain, characterized by altered brain structure and function.”

Regardless of any studies I certainly believe that from my experience in the world. Gambling, drinking, drugs etc

I believe there are studies that agree with us.

I only drink on days ending in "Y", and I can quit anytime I want; I just don't want!

This is an on-going discussion, and I don't think that the medical community will ever come to a concrete answer.

Disease vs. Disorder
While these two terms are often used interchangeably by doctors, there are subtle differences. A disease is distinct and measurable.

When I was fresh out of the service I drank most days for 2 years straight. Then I slowed down to about have the days. Now it's when I can catch a break long enough to drink. I'll binge given the chance but only at the ranch. Too busy at home.

Apparently it affects some peoples planning skills, or else they wouldn't be complaining about not being able to purchase hard liquor on Sunday or Beer before 10:00 AM.
Some folks are immune though, I have seen pictures of your Beer Fridge and your Liquor Cabinet.

https://drugfree.org/article/is-addiction-a-disease/

"Addiction, clinically referred to as a substance use disorder, is a complex disease of the brain and body that involves compulsive use of one or more substances despite serious health and social consequences. Addiction disrupts regions of the brain that are responsible for reward, motivation, learning, judgment and memory."

Addictions aren't a disease. I don't care what a psychologist or medical professional says - you aren't born addicted. You don't magically walk past someone smoking a cigarette and become addicted.

They are a choice. No one forces anything into your body other than you and your own mind. Period. Your choices lead to your body becoming physically dependent upon something - your choices lead the reward center of your brain re-wiring itself.

Doesn't matter if it's alcohol, porn, drugs, nicotine - etc. You are a product of your choices.

Been down all those roads. You have to choose to quit - just like your chose to start.

So not a disease. It would fall under the same theory to treat nicotine addiction. I didn't know smoking was a disease, and it's not protected under AWDA.

Let's be honest any classification of disease is really just there as a protection under the American Disabities Act, as far as employment goes.

I was trying to refer to how the medical community views alcoholism.

My personal belief is that it’s a disorder. Some people have mental conditions or diseases which may make it worse and/or them more susceptible to substance abuse and addiction.

People on the THF can call it a choice, addiction, disorder, disease, affliction, evil spirits or demonic possession. I don’t really care.
