Sam Houston National Forest, not alot of Dove areas, but good deer, hog, and ducks on the north end of Lake Conroe. it'll take you about an hour to get there, if you come down Hwy 30 to Shiro and then cut over to 149.

Pig out, i've never hunted the public land in east texas,i hunt Hill county. For me the trick to public land success is 1: put in the time 2: put in more time 3: put in some more time and 4 : don't get discouraged by the other hunters in the woods. You will work your butt off but WILL be successfull if you do. PM me if you need more info.

Yes the Davy Crockett, is within 2 Hrs, never hunted there, but i've heard good things about it. All you need to do in the SHNF is put in your time scouting. I take a doe every year out of there with my bow.

I went there some time in the mid ninetys, got a few hogs and seen a few deer. Was not many people there when I was hunting either.

College station to Diboll is 2 hrs... can get to areas of Davy Crockett in about 40 minutes faster than that. There are some really nice deer in the area and they can be found if the time is put in.

Yes, if your willing to hump it through the woods. If you by a public land permit, they'll send you a book, with all the public hunting land all over the state.
