Got an email yesterday that I have been drawn for a mule deer tag. I have a 25-06 and a 7mm Rem Mag. Which gun you take? This is in Central Eastern CO so mainly open country.

Better to take, and practice with, the 7 mag. You never know. Both are adequate and great rounds.

Both will work if shot placement is right. I would pic the 7 mag over the quarter bore though.

The one you shoot best, both will kill any mule deer. On hunts I usually take a spare rifle anyway since you never know when something can go wrong.
Sucks when a scope goes out on a hunt, fall and catch a rock with the scope etc.

Used a 270 on my first muley and my 6.5 prc on last years buck......both died quickly. I'd probably take the 7 mag, if I was you. Mainly for the windy conditions you're likely to find in eastern Colorado.

7 Rem Mag
I have one, and it was built to hunt west. Mule deer and elk have hit the ground at the other end of it.
Practice up on shooting a bit of distance.

Both will work just fine. Take the one you are the most confident in.

It's gonna blow out there, the 7 mag would be my choice and take that 25-06 as a backup for the reasons stated above. Some rolling ground and creek bottoms but other than that mostly crop land and open country.

I like a little more horsepower so a 7mm would be a good choice. I split the difference and shoot my Muley’s with a .257 wby....7mm performance with less recoil
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Either one will work just fine. If you are recoil shy take the 25 06. If not then take the 7 Rem Mag. In big open country a 7 mag bests a 25-06 except for recoil.

Sucks when a scope goes out on a hunt, fall and catch a rock with the scope etc. 100% agree. Year before last I took my .270 Win with my 6.5 Swede as back up. Would hate to be 14 hours from home and bump the scope or drop the rifle. That being said, I'm currently putting together a .264 Win Mag for CO.
