Why don't you ask the engineer if he has to block both crossings and if so why ?.

Years ago when I grew up in Edgewood, there was an underpass rock road on the east side of town about where the park is now. Half the time it was covered in water, but atleast you could make it under the tracks. But I know they took that out years ago. Still when I go over to my mom's house I get caught by those trains.
Have you tried Q & Brew yet on HWY 19 just north of the interstate?

Talk to your road commissioner. They may be able to help. I know the neighborhood where an old girlfriend lived had an issue but they were scheduled trains and the residents were told to plan around the blocks because they were the same place same time everyday.

Yeah they filled it in about 2 years ago. No real reason as to why - kind of like when the city shut down the city lake...no one was ever given the same reason even if they asked the same person.

Q & Brew is decent - not great - not bad - good addition to the area. Good beers.

your problems with blocked crossings will continue to persist and will get worse as class 1 railroads continue to implement precision railroading operating plans. one of the main drivers of this plan is to reduce train crew numbers by taking smaller trains (let's say a mile long) that used to only block one or two crossings at a time by strategically stopping to avoid blocking more crossings, and doubling or even tripling the length of those trains. now you have a train that might be 3 miles long that has no choice but to stop where it is due to the fact they can't go any further without passing a stop signal ( which by the way can lead to a head on collision an oncoming train or dismissal from employment at best). now the train that once blocked a couple crossings has blocked every crossing in town.
do not place blame or be angry with the lowly train crew (the engineer and the conductor) as they have ZERO say in where they stop these days. automated train scheduling arranges these stops via dispatcher driven computer.
calling to complain would be futile as these practices were classified as legal and necessary to interstate commerce by the federal railroad administration and the national surface transportation board under the make America great administration. its all in the name of revitalizing big business, just remember while you are sitting there watching that train forever at that crossing you are witnessing how the plan to ease restrictions on big business works.

also you would find it interesting that one of the biggest lobbyist AGAINST this practice of longer trains is none other than the despicable evil Rail Labor Unions. their first concern is obviously reduced crews means less revenue for the union so let's call it what is really is, self protection. but their side arguments include civic discontent and unrest over blocked crossings and endangering the public by doing so means anti railroad sentiment among politicians constituents leading to anti rail legislation in the future.

now you know the rest of the story....ain't that a stick in the eye lol

Listen to Bear. The dollar value of your inconvenience pales in comparison to the economic benefit proved by the RR. In other words, get used to waiting.

Whatever solution you arrive at will cost you time or money or both.
You can start by turning your back on goods shipped by rail to save the consumer money on freight.
Then you can raise the local taxes enough to pay for new overpasses.
Or you can leave home earlier so waiting on a train does not dog knot your day.

If you're referring to the part about not blocking roadways for more than 10 minutes, that law was repealed a few years ago.

Temple had an ordinance that a train couldn’t stop at a crossing for longer than 10 min.

There are 3 railroad crossings in town - one on FM 859 - the next on the next street over - and another on a country road about 1/2 mile down. There are NO other ways through town - besides about a 15-20 minute drive around to 19 or back into Wills Point. Wife was made late to work this morning - and now can't get home for lunch/to let the dogs out.

Is it legal for a train to stop and block every single crossing - multiple times per week - for extended periods (20+ minutes)?

There used to be an emergency underpass in town - but the RR Company filled it in and removed it.

One would think this creates a pretty big public safety issue - not to mention the nuisance for people who live around here. They always seem to do it during morning rush hour or lunch time. Getting to be quite annoying. I understand the need to stop - but I do not understand stopping and block every single crossing in town.

One of my good friends sisters was in a car that hit a train stopped on a crossing on a foggy night. 2 died, she survived and got somewhere in the area of 10 million for it. Unmarked crossing.
