I have a idea that I want to see if anyone else has done? I'm thinking about putting a pit blind by my feeder. I got to thinking about it in my spare time, and now it is just about all I think of. I hunt in LaSalle County were it is really flat with wide cuts in the brush. Most of the blinds are high towers to look over the brush. I have a ground blind that is 60 yards from my feeder (indian corn). You can see 300 yards in either direction if you want to spin in your chair all day.! I was thinking about having a welder make a blind like those pit blinds a person would hunt water foul in. But I would want it to be 8 feet wide and 4 feet long, with windows on all sides. If the hole was dug correct I could be no more than 2-3 feet aboue the ground with my gun barrel. The outside could be covered with brush, and cammo. A person could put bar stools to sit on and have a mount on the window to rest your gun. My thinking is when the deer come to the feeder (indian corn) they are forever looking up and around when they are in the open, but only look down while feeding. I never shoot in the brush when I sit in a high blind, and very seldom do I shoot in the brush on the ground. This could be a new twist to what is already the greatest show on earth. I could put a high blind about 150 yards on the other side of the feeder and put the pit blind 60 yards on the back side. A person could stay in a rig like that all day and stand or move a bit without the deer getting edgy. We have had this lease for many many years, so I'm not worried about what will happen to my blind. The deer in that area move all day which makes it a very good idea to stay from dawn to dusk, but enjoy some comfort for myself. I have a remote for my feeder (indian corn) that I push that will feed when I push it, and it is on a timer so something is at the feeder most all of the time. Any ideas?

I feed Indian Corn, the deer really seem to like it and stay at the feeder longer......and longer....!

There's a guy west of Hondo that has exactly what you need. I'm not going to help you but if you look you'll find him.

3 foot is about eye level for a deer. Would suggest some covers for windows as not to be backlit.

Don't forget something to keep the snakes, scorpions and rain out. How would you get in it?

I think I would put a lid on the top and have steps going down in it. The snakes and other things are where I's stuck so far. But there is plenty of time to put this in motion.

I hunted the last two seasons in LaSalle county and if you want to build a pit blind then be my guest.

The rattlers I've killed and seen out there you couldn't get me into a pit blind, not to mention the hogs and badgers, coyotes, etc. even if you tied me up!

While you're at it, might want to throw some pop corn on the ground for the deer so they can enjoy the show while they stay longer at the feeder!

Im thinking about some kind of windows also. It would take some time putting them up and taking them down each time, but that would help with keeping unwanted items in my blind. Last thing I want is a snake in my blind. I have been able to keep them out of my ground blind so far, so who knows? So far it is only a idea.

No meaning anything by this, but where and how far will a missed shot travel before it is stopped or at least slowed down
Would hate to be on the next place over and have a stay bullet wizzing by my head

I have always wanted to build one but if a snake ever got in there thats going to be a fun ride..

They had one out of a old water tank on TBH... Think that might be the best way to go

one benifit of shooting from an elevated stand is saftey. shooting below your target in a pit blind as you described in an area is wide open does not sound very safe to me. Other than that I think its a good idea and would work.

Sounds good but after all that work you will not want to crawl back in there when you have to chase the snakes and other animals out of it every time. Lease I hunt pigs on did this several years ago, the next year no one wanted to hunt them because they made perfect dens for a lot of things. They are still there and we check them if some one wants to go snake hunting from time to time.

You have to look at it this way.

Number one you are creating the perfect environment that all cold blooded and warm blooded critters find comfortable, which makes it an ideal food source.

Shelter from the heat/cold, in an area amonst the most hostile desert setting around for miles, that will attract everything in the food chain to your one stop ideal location.

I think if you make it a sealed blind...then unwanted critters won't be able to get in...you can surely design it to be air tight. I'm thinking of a blind like this also with a turrett style top. The brush where I hunt is so thick it provides a bunker stlye backdrop from allowing bullets to go far...But I have found my 22 hornet does not travel far anyway...you could take an old silo or even a septic tank as your base structure and go from there. Once you get it in the ground...sealing it would be easy...

Think you can/Think you can't/Either way you're right

i cant believe the obvious question isnt being asked.

since we all know that you feed indian corn and it keeps the deer at the feeder longer, i am wondering why would even need a blind.

why not just walk up and shoot them in the face while they are in a shaman like trance from eating the indian corn.

Stuff my dad said in the deer blind

"I can dive deeper and come up drier"
"did you do that?"

Well that would not be very sporting now would it? Why gumb my sack because you feed something different than I do? I enjoy my time in the wilderness, and so should everyone else that hunts, so if my feed makes my hunt a good time what does it matter to you? I will not take the low road on this forum and gumb someones sack because they do something different.

I feed Indian Corn, the deer really seem to like it and stay at the feeder longer......and longer....!

no offense meant at all. just having some fun with you.
you seem to be a good sport and i was just playing along.
given all the laughs here, i thought you would get a chuckle out of my comment.

sounds like this topic needs to be dropped altogether.
there was no low road here, like you, i feed what i want to feed and it works for me. i dont have any issues with what other people feed.

Not a problem. But I'm still looking into the pit blind, although the snake deal is making me re-think the idea. I may just keep my ground blind before it is all over. There is plenty of room in my blind for more than I need. And no snakes......

I watched a cosby show episode where they said snakes can't climb or go down steps... I'm not even comfy getting into pop-up stands b/c of finding them lounging in my chair.... & have even found a cpl in my climber seat after I've taken the cord off it and unfolded it...while 20' up. Remember deer aren't the only critters that like indian corn, small rodents enjoy it as well (if there are any crumbs left over after the deer have demolished it), so imo that should attract large quantities of snakes to the area.

Just givin' you a hard time, hope you find a way to get what you are wanting done. I can't think of a way of waterproofing or snakeproofing something of the sort unless it involves a sealed off box stand and a backhoe.

Your scent will roll on the ground instead of drifting high above the ground. Keep it sealed from coons or you'll be standing knee deep in poop!

I love nice roomy sealed ground blinds.

I just don't think all the effort needed to snakeproof, rat proof, and bug proof a pit blind is worth all the hastle.

Besides once you build it, that is where it stays!
