Give me a call,I gave you my # in the PM you need to get a Hood hunting license and have proof of hunter safety, if you are bow hunting that is a whole other story all together. There are pigs everywhere I have a few places folks told me to go but I just don't know what to look for??

Well yes and no. There is a relaxed entry wich means all you have to have is a valid drivers license but its only from like 1130 untill 2 im not for sure on the times though don't quote me on that

You will also need to have your weapon registered on post if I'm not mistaken. So that may be an additional headache. You might want to call the Fort Hood Sportsmen's Center (Rod and Gun Club), their number is (254)532-4552.

Thats not all true. The Ft. Hood post Commander just recently had that rule ammended. It now states that you only have to register your gun on post if you live in on post housing or you plan to keep it in your unit arms room. The gun has to be lock in a truck or truck box, unloaded and the ammo has to be seperate. You do have to declare you have a gun in the truck but only if they decide to search your car. That saves alot of headache

I was stationed down there for 5 years they have lots of hogs and deer. Get a slug gun!!!! The rifle hunts are guided only. The Hogs were north along the river shoot me a PM with your number and I'll help out. Goes for all the FT. Hood guys... how does it go "IF you Ain't Cav you Ain't chit"... my hunting partner is still down there but he is laid up for now.

there are deer on fort hood, but you have to have a guide take you out to a stand and put you where they want you. it's really hit or miss. I've gone hunting there several times and have yet to see a deer. they are there but not real thick.

there are plenty of open area's that are Bow, shotgun w/ slug. I have a slug gun buy one and do the leg work. I loved being stationed down there. Lots of big deer up around North fort.

I had forgotten to mention the bow/ shotgun areas, thanks for straightening that out. I have also heard about good sized bucks around north for. If you put out a feeder, make sure to hide it well. Lots of theives out there.

I've taken numberous deer and turkey off of Ft. Hood. My favorite area's for deer were Bear Creak, and Owl Creak on the North Eastern side of the post. Some area's of those creaks near where they go into Belton lake are really good. One spot in particular was near a spring that was located just south of Bear creak near where it emptied into Belton lake. My dad and I killed several deer back around that spring. You'll know it when you find it cause there's a concrete sistern where the spring empties into it before it flows on down toward the lake. It was one of the most beautifull spots on post. I also enjoyed many a good hunt along Cowhouse creak on the West side of the post. On the North Side of Cowhouse creak, just West of West Range Road, there is a large grove of pecan trees. I've shot countless squirrels and turkey's there. The woods and fields between that grove and the next feeder creak that goes into Cowhouse creak from the North is also pretty good for turkeys. I shot a deer or two in that area also with a bow during bow season. Also, on the south side of Cowhouse and to the west of West Range Road there is a small coral next to the tank trail. It's near a big field. The dove used to come over that coral going to some trees to roost in the mornings after feeding in the fields. We'd shoot our limits between 0900 and 1100hrs at that spot, just like clock work. We didn't see many hogs on post back then, early 80's and 90's. But, there was some real good deer and turkey hunting. Not to mention some real good dove, and quail if you knew where to go.

Man, talking about hunting on Ft. Hood sure has brought back some fond memories....

Thanks,

Marty

Now that is some great info, shaveman and I are getting together sat I think to go shot and do some poking around, I think I know where the pecan trees are, I was in that area last weekend. we will see, all you guys with the good info we thank you for that knowledge. North fort has some really nice deer have seen several this last july and I have had a feeder already stolen and it was way burried in the woods. Good thing it only cost me 40 bucks.

Kevin

You're welcome. I loved hunting on Ft. Hood. It's been a few years since I have hunted out there. The spots I listed were some of my favorites. As I understand it they have renumbered the area's since I've hunted out there. I have an old map still. That's why I gave landmarks instead.

I also hunted quite a bit on the South East side of the post. Around Larned Lake, Engineers lake, and over near Heiner Lake has some good hunting. I also liked to hunt on the backside of the boyscout camp. I guess it would be the south side. There is a tall chain link fence around it, and it made some great funnels for deer and turkey. I don't know if it's still there or not.

Thanks,

Marty

for bear and owl creek, you are looking for the training areas in the low twenties, north of belton lake. for hogs go to the thirties, south of the lake. a good spot is on the south side of thirty six, there will be two small ponds that the hogs hit pretty good.
