So I have 2 boxes of Weatherby 120 nosler partitions that are factory loads to get my rem 700 on paper. If they shoot good (1 inch or less @ 100 yards) I have no problem buying factory ammo and shooting factory loads for it because it will only be shot for hunting.

If they don’t shoot what bullets/load should I try? My shots are generally 50-200 yards. I’m concerned about a softer bullet coming apart at close ranges so I’m thinking I need to stick with nosler partitions (120 grain) or accubonds (110 grain).

On hand I have about 80 117 grain Sierra game kings that I think will be to soft for the Weatherby mag?

Any other bullet recommendations or loads I should try with it? Thanks y’all

Before shooting please clean your gun so you have a baseline to start with, ensure all scope screws are torqued correctly and fire away.
Factory ammo should preform at the ranges you mentioned.
Good luck

My wife shoots a .257 Why Mag. Fun gun to shoot.

That’s what I’m hoping for. I’ve read a lot about bullets coming apart or blowing up at close distances so I’m a little nervous about that.

I like Weatherby ammo, never found a load that didn't shoot well. Personally I like to use something a little lighter maybe in the 100 grain range. Last ones I bought were the 87 grain speer points and they dropped my last buck in his tracks with a shoulder shot, busted both shoulders, didn't exit. Start getting over 300 lbs and I'd move up in weight. By the way I prefer Nosler Partitions over any other hunting round. 257 is by far my favorite Weather caliber.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

My .257 WBY load of choice for the last several years has been a 110 gr. AccuBond on top of 62g of IMR 4350 running a legit 3250 fps.

I can get that same 110 grain bullet moving 100-150 fps faster using a full load of H1000 but the groups open up.

The only factory ammo that I could never get to group from my MkV was a 90 grain Hornady Superformance loading. I don't remember the exact bullet but I do remember a proven MOA gun throwing 4-5 inch patterns...

So even the lighter not as heavily constructed bullets would be ok at the 50-75 yard mark? Due to hunting circumstance both places I hunt I shoulder shoot because I need deer to drop as close to where there shot as possible. I just don’t want to wound or lose an animal because a bullet was moving too fast when hitting an animal. I could always download the round though. I’m just not big into reloading if I don’t have to

Would you mind sharing why you're using a Weatherby Mag for 50 to 75 yard shots?

I'm running 115 VLD’s at 3250 26” barrel. No issues from 10yards to 400

I've used most wby factory offerings. Only factory load I had accuracy issues was 110 AB

Only explosive issues I’ve had not making to vitals was a Hot VLD, @3400 and bullet impact over 200. Pretty sure it was either a bad batch or jacket integrity was compromised in barrel.

I’m a big fan of all quarter bore rifle chamberings and have always wanted a 257 Weatherby because it’s king of the quarter bore rifles. Both places I hunt are either heavy brush or heavy woods or wide open pasture and deer pop up out of unexpected places sometimes on both places that I hunt.

The gun was bought with hopes of in the next few years going on a mule deer or pronghorn hunt or even some exotics, but as 99% of my hunting is whitetale hunting I don’t want to leave it in the safe and use it only every few years.

Most of my shots are around 125-175 mark but close shots are never out of the question where I hunt.

Thanks for the info. I had a few bad experiences with some Berger vlds that a guy loaded for a 6.5 creedmoor I had long ago and haven’t tried them sense. I might have to give them another chance though

If my partitions don’t pan out this will probably be the first load I try. I have never used the accubonds but they seem to be a good fit for the Weatherby mag

My Uncle shoots the 257 Weatherby exclusively and shoots handloaded 115 Nosler Partitions with a bunch of IMR-7828 for about 3300 fps.

That bullet works at 50 yards or 500 yards.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

I know it’s the best choice for how I hunt or the most practical but I’ve had a long time fascination of the round and found rifle chambered for it that I love at a price I couldn’t pass up so now I’m trying to figure out the best way to use it for my hunting situation

You're trying to make something do it all. I get it. And I wish you all the best.

And just because you want to. Good enough for anyone.

Another vote for the 115 gr Nosler BT. I shoot the factory ammo in mine and its great. Shot deer at 45 yds and over 250 yds and never had one not be DRT. Never had a problem with bullet blow up at any range. It's a great caliber. I will mention, good luck finding factory ammo right now.

120gr NP over 71gr RL25 shoots great in my Accumark. Just under an inch with no tweaking or fine tuning. Load taken from Nosler’s website.

Also want to try 7828ssc and some other bullets, but I’d be plenty happy just sticking with the 120 NP and RL25.
