I've never hunted a deer that was as smart as the 420 pound pig I shot a few weeks ago.

But, there aren't many things better than hunting a mature animal...no matter the species!

I'd say a whitetail, based on one fact alone. When you put food in front of a pig, they become as dumb as a fencepost. I dare anyone to sneak up on a wild whitetail feeding, across open ground, throw a rock at them, and hit them. I've done it with pigs, with several pigs present. I've done the same stalk to hit them with arrows as well. When I can do that with a whitetail, me might argue.

Take food out of the mix, and pigs can be pretty wily critters.

But I have never seen a whitetail dig a leg out on a feeder to knock it over. Then roll it around to get the corn out of it. I have seen a hog do it over and over again, and he only works on one leg.

women.....

...cant get ANYTHING past them!

But IMO deer have a better nose in the air and pigs have better smarts. Deer know how to stay safe and avoid most situations puttin them in danger by way of smell (most of the time you probably never see them)

But, I think pigs have a better sense of whats goin on and whats around and just generally more curious as to their surroundings..even thought they ARE greedy eaters!

depending on the situtation i think either one could be considered "smarter";
Intelligence wise....hogs, they learn things MUCH quicker than whitetails!

Well the pig just wants to eat for a day. The deer wants to eat for a lifetime.

You cant sneak up on a whitetail like that because they have better eye sight than hogs. They both come running to the dinner bell when your feeder goes off...Ill take the pig.

A whitetail is wired differently than a pig. A whitetail in nature is prey, not predator. Period. A pig is both, but only prey to apex predators like cougars.

A whitetail's defense or "fight or flight" (mainly flight) mechanisms have evolved to much more accute levels than that of a pig. They are more sensitive to changes in their immediate environment and run first, ask questions later. That being said, as mentioned by others, pigs have a mucher higher sense of actual intelligence as it is defined by the ability to distinguish patterns and problem solve. Yeah, a pig will go crazy with food present, but that's because they aren't expecting to be attacked as nothing in nature will typically attack a full-grown sow or boar. Even cougars won't unless they're driven to through hunger.

Neither are inately intelligent, but pigs are up there in the animal kingdom.

LMAO, I just doubt a deer can think that far in advance. I have no doubt the pig figured out how to knock my feeder over. I have on camera a couple times doing it.

that has nothing at all to do with intelligence. my cuz taught her hog to sit on command.... ive never seen a deer "taught" to do anything. ur comment is like saying a man is stupid because he is blind.....fail.

Define "smarter". If you mean capable of learning that would be the hog BUT if you mean harder-to-hunt-smarter, without a doubt Deer are smarter!

As to the stalking in an oat field, thats only because deer have better eyesight, not because they are smarter.

I live on a ranch around an abundance of both, hogs have a sixth sense thats hard to describe, even more so than deer IMHO.

I have had as many deer in my trap as hogs, good thing I don't have a top on it. Deer are much more cautious, where a hog will just walk up to the feeder and start eating a deer will check things out first. I believe that is because hogs don't have the fear of things as much as deer.

I'd say deer! I showed pigs for like 10 years and my dad was a pig farmer. They were some of the stupidest animals ever! Now just by watching them you can see who's smarter. Watch a deer one day. They can sometimes stay at a treeline for hours waiting for the right time to go eat the corn right in front of them. They are very weary and know what's going on around them. Pigs just hall @ss out there and tear everything up that's in there way.

Now simply as humans we call them both "dumb" because they can't see us! Well because we have expensive stand that go up about 20-30 feet in the air where the only damn thing that will see you is a bird and nothing can hear you. Then we wear all this camo and drown ourselves in pretty much spray on dirt. Then we like hanging piss on trees so it smells like everythings around here except man. Now i'm a big hunter and do use this stuff to but really think. Neither is stupid in my mind. Now dont get me started on stupid @SS goats!

My vote is for the swine. I had a pot bellied pig when I was in the Army and that thing would play with the toilet paper with my exwifes cats. When I busted them the thing started pushing the door closed behind itself when it wanted to play with the toilet paper so we wouldnt see it in there.

Ive never owned a deer though...not a live one anyway. LOL
