What's the collective opinion on Remage (prefit) barrels for Remington 700 actions? Looks like I can get just the blued long action and bolt for about $350, and then a McGowen barrel for $400ish plus trigger, stock, and bottom metal and be on my way to a semi-custom budget friendly rifle. I've built tons of AR15 uppers but never messed with bolt guns much

They work. Some don’t like the way they look. It’s probably won’t be as accurate as a full custom with professionally installed barrel, but I don’t shoot well enough to justify that expense

Criterion Remage barrels will generally match whatever a high dollar barrel installed by a custom gunsmith can do, has been my experience.

Savage is respected for its acuracy, it is the same system they use, minus the floating bolt head.

So I was the remage can not possibly ever be as accurate as a shouldered barrel put on by a smith. I tried it once and I’m hooked. I have rifles from GAP, W. TX Ordnance, Mcwhorter, and Bugholes to name a few and my latest rifle was a remage and it shoots as accurate as any semi custom build (factory action worked) or full custom ( Custom action). All things being equal it’s the person doing the machine work that separates barrels. Yes an ER Shaw or Wilson can be as accurate as a Bartlien or Krieger but the price difference to me is insurance for knowing I have an extremely high percentage I have a concentric and properly machined barrel. If I’m dropping some money on a build I’ll save a little while longer to get a “premium barrel”. The other thing is getting proper headspace. The rifle that printed this group below has everything squared up but the threads weren’t opened up as I bought the barrel from another smith. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but once I do the barreled action burnt bronze I think it’ll be as sexy as a non barrel nut rifle. FYI this was an Excalibur blank chambered and contoured by a smith I know and highly recommend. Excalibur is not considered top tier but mid tier by most. First 6 shots through after shooting 2 to get on paper at 100: 6.5 Creedmoor Remage 200 yard group:

I bought a McGowan prefit for my Ruger 77 in 6.8 SPC. I would buy another.

I don't know how McGowan does it but it works fine. I took to gunsmith and he installed it and test shot it. It was the first time I ever swapped out a barrel.
The old 6.8 barrel was a pencil barrel that shot like garbage.

I have a McGowan prefit on mine. I have never really shot groups with it, but looks like i need to settle down and try. It shoots well and is a deer/hog killer for sure though.

Recently ordered my 2nd Remage prefit, first was a CarbonSix 7mm-08 and the one on order is a McGowen 6.8 spc ii. I’m confident both will suit my needs just fine.
