I have done it, but not what I would use if I had a choice. Need a little more size.

Absolutely. For insurance, use a TSX or Nosler Partition.

with the right bullet, it would be fine. Appropriate bullets (designed for the job at hand) are more important than the cartridge that launches them.

I've never shot a deer or pig with a .243 that wasn't stone dead before he even hit the ground. I wouldn't hesitate to go afield with mine...

It will work. I wouldnt recommend ballistic tips for axis unless you shoot it in the neck

within a 100yds you shouldn't have a problem. (even out further, just a matter of shot placement)

Nothing like shooting a little .243 and being the only hunter in camp who has meat hanging from the pole.

Years ago my Dad had the same question of me and my 6mm Rem. While cleaning an axis I held up my rifle up to the ribcage and asked him if he thought the bullet would go through if I pulled the trigger from here. He said "yes, of course". I then asked why he wouldn't think it would do the same thing a hundred yards away? That sort of changed his perspective. At 100 yards about any 243 will be going at least 2700fps and have 1500ft. lbs of energy. Just use non-fragile bulelts.

.243 will do the job. Heck, I've seen people kill black bear with them.

I've killed six hogs this year with my .243. I use the Federal Blue box ammo 80 gr. So I would assume that it would kill an Axis Deer. All my kills have been a 75 yards or less.

Why limit yourself to 100 yds, with a 100 gr Hornady, or Nosler partition it wll kill him like the world was jerked from under him at 250, or even 300 yds with a heart/lung shot! Just stick the bullet where it belongs, and get your knife sharpened! Stay away from the lighters bullets, however, they are designed for coyotes, not big deer!

My son and I both shoot 243's and this is him last year using his Savage 110 in 243 w/factory remington 100gr ammo @100yds- you be the judge, but a 243 is more than enough gun even beyond 100yds:

Something to keep in mind.

A good sized man weighs 200 Lbs. A really big man weighs 300. A 200 Lbs. Texas white tale buck would be a pretty darn big deer.

Are there any 200+ Lbs. volunteers to stand in front of a .243 to show how inadequate it is?

I own and shoot a .243, if you look around on the internet there are several ranches that require a .30 caliber or larger for an Axis. Will it kill it YES! will you find it maybe...... maybe not, good luck.

And as these conversations always end: shot placement matters more as the cartridge gets smaller and the game gets bigger.
