this will be my first time for dove hunting. I've got the gun and camo, but what else should I bring with me? What do you guys take?

Water and sunscreen should be high on the list. It is still hot during dove hunting season.

I always take a small travel size can of Deep Woods Off and stick at least 2 bottles of frozen water in my pouch or seat. In September, it doesn't take them long to thaw out so you can still get a drink when you need to, but they will stay colder longer.

I also keep a 5 gallon water container and ziploc bags in the truck. That way I can clean the birds in the field.

DISCLAIMER: If you do that, it's probably a good idea to leave a wing attached just to keep our 'pickier' GW's happy.

Always bring extra shells. I mean, determine how many boxes you think you'll need, and bring 1 extra.

Game shears make cleaning 100x easier.

You can bring a stool/chair, but I usually end up standing and never use it. Especially if you see the birds patterning over a different area - you want to be mobile.

100* + is common on Sept 1. Plenty of bottled water for you. Opening day is Tuesday this year so be prepared for lots of hunters after work.

The OU hat!

The year that Florida State and OU played for the National Championship; my adopted son was a senior at FSU and my wife is a Sooner...I sat in my recliner and did nothing but breathe and drink beer during that game.

Southern Miss is my school.

Talk about mixed emotions.

Other than the obvious (gun and shells) I take a cup of coffee or a bottle of frozen water with me to my secret prime Dove hunting spot. If I need anything else, I walk AAAALLLLLLLLLLLL the way to the house and get it. (about 50 yards)

Shatter proof sunglasses are a must. I caught a pellet just under my eye last year. Any higher and I would have been in trouble.

Yeah, beer is just not for breakfast anymore!!

Honestly, I have tossed back a few while hunting, probably shouldn’t, and would always respect and never do it around someone that felt strongly against it., especially someone you did not know.

But I tell ya, there is really nothing better than just waiting, till end of day, you are all hot and sweaty, LST is over, maybe a long walk back to the truck, lay your birds on the tailgate ready to clean, and cracking that first beer of the day that has been sitting on cold ice all day, a beer just don’t get any better than that!!

While hunting? Never. A guy that "only had a couple" nearly shot my foot off. Put a hole in the ground less than an inch from my toes. Drinking while hunting with a firearm is bad bad mojo. Like drinking and driving, if you hurt or kill someone even from an accident that might have happened if you were not drinking, your probably going to get a long sentence due to it, unless it is your kid and the judge feels you had been punished enough by your actions. The risk/benefit is not worth it folks.

I take

water - 1 box of shells- some sun screen and something to sit on. FOr the dogs I fill up two marine ice chests with water and carry along a baby pool. I put the pool under a shade tree and fill it wil the water from the coolers. That way they can get in it when they need to or want to.
