Agree with the need more weight, more speed is nice for targets and flattened trajectory but I learned long ago shooting traditional archery go with heavy arrow setup for penetration. Smaller diameter also helps for penetration with less shaft diameter there is less drag on the arrow going through the animal.
What was the arrow weight you were using and what is your new setup?
If I am using carbon arrows it is usually Axis arrows with the 75gr brass insert and 125gr heads giving 200 grains up front.

I was using FMJ 340s because I shoot a lot of 3D in the offseason, so I kept that set up the same. I was embarrassingly around 488 grains, because that was what I had always used in the past. But I stiffened up the arrow and added 75 grain half out inserts. I bought some Axis arrows too. I’ve now doubled my FOC and over 550 grains. Moving up to 125 grain next year.

I like 550+ with any expandable head and at least 55lbs draw. With your FMJs and a good non expandable blade I would have expected that shot to be a pass through and dead deer with a fairly short trail. Just my thoughts from archery hunting.
Glad you got the buck, what new heads were you using this year? Just curious. I switched back to fixed blade heads years ago after a couple failure to open or fully open expandables.

I normally shoot Grim Reapers because of how they deploy I think they are the best expandable on the market. But I had a friend talk me into the RaptorTricks. I shot the practice head and really liked how it flew, so that’s what I used on this buck. Going forward I’m going back to the Grim Reapers with a heavier arrow. I might look into some fixed blades next season.

I haven't tried the RaptorTricks and from this and some other comments i have seen, glad I haven't.
Most importantly though Glad you got that buck, he is a very good one and you have to love those that just show up that are bigger than the target buck Congrats
