I'm from Stratford and go back there every year to pheasant hunt. The last 3 years have been amazing. I usually don't go opening weekend because there are so many hunters. Most small towns in the Panhandle have a Chamber of Commerce or Lions Club hunt. Contact one of them and they can probably set you up.

Thanks to all for the positive feed back. Your all great guys and great hunters......O.K. thats all true, but some of you need help with the shooting skills...lol...remember I've seen most of you shoot! lol.
Seriously, Thank you from down deep on the kind words. You make this a good hunt. All I do is provide the yearly mojo to get them healthy and in one spot for you. I'm so looking forward to another great season with you. Hunting and making good friends its all part of the mans big plan. Ballinger.

Hunted outside of Plainview a few years ago and the birds were abundant. Hope to get back up there this year.

Another thumbs up for Tim Ballinger in Dumas! This will be our third year coming up with Tim, and have been extremely happy the last two. From talks with Tim thus far it looks to be another great year and we already counting down the days. There has not been a day yet that i have not hit a limit there and sounds like it will be more of the same this year. CAN"T WAIT TO GET THERE!!

Once you have seen the aerobatic flight show put on by agile wild pheasants, a hunter will quickly notice that the pen raised birds are not in their league. Wild birds are much more exciting to chase.
A pheasant hatched and raised in the wild chased by aerial predators and vermin since the day he came out of the egg is a completely different animal from a pen raised birds.

With that being said I realize that hunters from the big city areas of Dallas or Houston can't always make the long drive to the Panhandle or Kansas. There is definitely a place for pen raised birds. Some of the wild panhandle pheasant may even be descendents of escape shooting preserve pheasants that got away 50 or 60 years ago.

There are numerous north Texas counties south of the Red River with great pheasant potential.
If you go to "Google Earth" and zoom down and look closely at the counties of Wilbarger, Haskell, Knox and Baylor, you will notice a number of Center Pivot irrigation systems (the kind you see around Dumas or Hereford). The key word here is water, rain water in summer or irrigation water. In the southwest moisture is key to pheasant range growth.

There is a new Forth Worth - Dallas Chapter of "Pheasants Forever" I am hoping that this chapter and/or along with the TP&WD, wild-trap 800 or 1000 truly wild pheasants from the upper and middle Texas panhandle and relocated them (in the spring) to the above counties. Develop habitat and protect them for five years, give them time to grow and reproduce.

In those counties you mention, the key is not water; its cover. All those counties do not have the type of cover phez need for roosting, nesting, brooding, loafing, and escape cover. You wont see CRP fields full of lush grass and heavy weedy cover/old buildings, tree deadfalls. if the cover was out there, phez would do pretty good. the grain is there in some places, but the cover just aint there to support them.

I still dont believe you know of what you speak of here on these forums...cover!!! Please provide pics of what you speak of... I provided the pics on the last forum to stop you from running on about what you do not know of to be correct info. Provide pics, move on or just read and don't comment about what you do not know. I have lived in the TX PANHANDLE!! Born and raised....40 years now. WE HAVE NO TREES. Annual rainfall of 12 inch per year. Farmers are very concerned with spraying weeds in order to not allow weeds or resistance to weeds by certain herbicide modes of action. It requires more than crp grass and certain crops. Please read, research and provide your resorces of information before you just offer unexplained opinions.......PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE DONT DUMB DOWN THIS FORUM.

Shorthair- sorry if i am ruining your business on here. Not my intentions, but obviously you are $$$ hungry and dont want that taken away from you. WHATEVER. The guy in the prior post was talking of these counties specificaly-Wilbarger, Haskell, Knox and Baylor. I guess you havent lived in the panhandle that long. Those counties ARE NOT in the panhandle, so settle down. As far as gruver, stratford, yea, good areas for phez. I just rather not pay $200/day for something that I can get drivin another 1.5 hrs for free. Cracks me up, you money-sucking leaches. Have fun, i will be shootin four cocks/day, while ur clients gettin 3/day. I will still have $$$$$$ after my trip. Your clients wont, so pipe down. Thanks.
