I'm liking the look and idea of them and thinking of getting one added to my 06.
How much are they to have put on after you buy the brake. If you have one or know much about em please chime in here.
Thanks

I know you usually put them on BIG guns but can't hurt on something like a 30-06 right + they look sweeeeet!

I found Doc's in Carroloton close to Dallas?? forgive the spelling. He is 180 for blue or 200 for SS. You have to have ear protection every shot, even when your going to shoot once out of a stand!!! I had one on my .300 Weatherby accumark. It helped, but then I got tired of it and sold it!!!

Brakes look cool and they reduce felt recoil. But + 1 on the hearing protection. I have a winchester 7 mag with the boss system I only fired it once without my hearing protection. That was enough for me.

Well I always wear plugs now. Didn't till about 5 years ago and I pay for it everyday! If your guns loudness was a 5 out of 10 before what would you say it is after the brake?
Thanks

depends on who makes the brake, could be a 12 if you get a harsh one.

My 7-08 has a brake on it. Put it on so I could spot my own shots while PD shooting. Work great, kicks like a 223 now. Yes, much louder. And I imagine that the more powder your burning, the louder it'd be. I always had LOUD stereo equipment in my cars when younger (still do in fact, but it's truck now), and work around loud tools and equipment every day. So my hearing suffers at certain tones anyway.

When hunting, one shot is not so bad with my rifle (700vls w.26"tube and brake). But more than one shot will have my ears ringing for a while. I don't worry about hearing protection for one shot at a deer. But even then, if given enough time, I stuff some tp in my ears. Especially if the pigs come in and I might shoot more than once. When I get in my stand I roll up a few small pcs of tp and keep them in my lap so they're handy when I might need them.

Again, my brake is on a smaller rifle than most are. It's so loud it'll set off car alarms behind the firing line at Gibson's gun range. But for me, and the application I got it for, it does it's job. And that's what I wanted.

I took my rifle to Rudy at Blueing Bro's in Mesquite. Several years ago. It was around $165 to have it done then. No idea what he'd charge now. Took about a week and a half. And it looks great on my varmint weight barrel. On a sporter weight barrel where they have to use a step-up style brake, they can look plumb butt ugly IMO. But I guess it depends on whether you want fancy or function?

I was impressed enough by the one I have that I ordered my 280 improved with a brake as well. Expecting about a 243 recoil out of it. Maybe more since it's on an Encore (lighter weight gun). But it should be a very noticeable decrease in recoil.

spend $60 on this http://www.cabelas.com/p-0044358228573a.shtml and you will never have to worry about muzzle brake noise and you will actually be able to hear game better. Not to mention they keep your ears warm when hunting.

Has anyone ever seen the "Savage" factory option muzzle brake on their bolt guns? I am looking at one right now, looks neat but not sure how effective it is.

I hate brakes and feel there's no real need for them except under exceptional circumstances (shoulder injury, etc.). Almost always, you're better off with either more rifle weight, a better stock / recoil pad, a PAST recoil shield (at the range), Mag-na-porting or just more practice.

Others like them and may be more recoil sensitive, so different strokes for different folks; I can't stand them.

BTW, I second the recommendation for Doc's, if you do decided to get the brake. Doc's is great, but schedule early because he's always busy.

I had Doc put a Gentry "quiet" break on my 300 ultra mag and it tamed the gun big time. Kicked less than my buddies 308 for sure. He did a SUPER job. Was not too Quiet though. I popped off 4 rounds at a big yote at around 600 or 700 yards in the middle of a plowed field and had serious ringing in my left ear for weeks. Thought I had done serious damage, but it got better.

Wear ear protection. PERIOD.

Which can make them very annoying to others when you're shooting at a public range.

This is the truth. My range hates me. I have a 300 Win mag with the BOSS system. I go during the middle of the day, so few people are around. Last time I went out, I blew all three coffee cans (for empty brass) off the neighboring stands.

+1 for recoil reduction. I'm certainly on the list for "kick anxiety". I can comfortably shoot this larger round with the brake.

In dallas, give Gene Williams a call around 65 for making and instalation. Awsome work you'll think he just drilled holes in the barrel when the finished product is done. The one on my 300wsm works wonders.

Yes they are 10 times as loud, I have hearing protection in the field, put them on just before shot takes all of 2 seconds.

Whinners at the range, Please.

IF the State didn't have such a F'ed off view of suppressors i'd never take it off my rifle , but until that day comes the muzzle break will have to do

Yes, but without the gross increase in noise. It reduces muzzle rise rather than recoil. The effect is a reduction in perceived recoil, without the nastiness of muzzle brakes.

I ain't sure how well they actually work, but to me they look cool. I have one on my SKS and I even put one on my 10/22. Yeah yeah... I know, but it makes my 10/22 feel better in my hands. It gives it some length so I don't feel like I am shooting a youth model.

Some rifle companies have stopped putting them on factory guns because of law suits from BLOWING OUT EAR DRUMS!

They will reduce recoil and i would have one on a gun for target/ bench shooting; but as some one who guides hunters i must say that I cringe in terror when I see a rifle pulled out with a muzzle brake.

also a good one will cost $200+ to buy and install,

Just carry a roll of duct tape with ya, and put a few rounds of tape around the brake. Have the customer verify zero, and all is well for you and your hunter.

Being an older fart, I just use reduced recoil ammo whenever I'm not expecting a shot over 150 yards.

Most of perceived recoil is the rocket effect. As gasses fly out of the muzzle, they push the rifle back. A muzzle brake reverses the direction of gas escape, so some of the rocket effect is pushing the rifle forward off your shoulder, cancelling some of the felt recoil. That's why they're so loud. For people next to you, it's almost like being forward of the muzzle.

They vary in efficiency. There are other ways to reduce perceived recoil. For example, a mercury recoild reducer in the butt of the stock spreads out the time over which the energy is delivered to you, making it feel like less overall.

You can also just make the rifle heavier. If you look at anything on how the rifle accelerates back into your body, you'll see that making the rifle heavier slows down the acceleration, reducing the felt recoil.

Adding weight to the stock, liquid or otherwise, will not irritate everyone else around you when you shoot with friends or at a range.
