The plan is to fill 3 55gallon plastic drums with Styrofoam/expanded poly before using them as flotation. The problem is it's not that easy to come by. Does anyone work somewhere they trash it pretty regular that could help me out?

Might I suggest you buy the large Styrofoam floating blocks...…
There are a lot of places, that sell them around the lakes...…..
Seems they might be easier to deal with, than foam filled barrels...…….
just a suggestion......

This one looks like $108/ drum to pour in foam it. A bit high but will get the job done. Also about average for what I’m seeing.

Edit: damn, helps if I add the link. http://www.totalboat.com/product/to...L_LL46wIV7vLjBx1KLgg0EAQYASABEgKALvD_BwE

Call this company https://www.reynoldsam.com/dallas/ Talk to one of the salesman, they might have one that will work.

Here is a list of the foams they carry https://www.smooth-on.com/category/foam/

Just take the drums to a place that does the spray foam insulating and have them fill them up for you.

I made a floating walkway using plastic drums, the ones i used had plugs i just made sure they were tight. They floated just like that, really they floated too high so i added some water.

That's a good idea. We had some guys out spray foaming the walls in my brothers house. I bet a contractor like that could help out the OP. If that is the same kind of foam.

Those white foam blocks break prices off too easy and leave stuff all over. It’s basically 24-7 littering to me

If i was doing it myself, i would try to find 55 gall plastic barrels with the correct plugs put some pipe dope on threads seal them up well and put a valve stem on them, no foam. They are thick as hell and should do fine for years and years and years and years.

foam wont add any buoyancy, it weighs more than air, displacement is all that matters, 55 gallon barrels with some water added for ballast is all you need

Yes...………………….
And, I was living there, when we had the great flood...………….
A lot of places around the lake went completely underwater...…………
Mine didn't.... but believe it or not... It got just under the storage unit on the right..
Both places, on either side of me, were flooded...………….
I miss the lake sometimes..... But, it's getting so busy out there now.....
Too crowded anymore......

Foam just gives you an extra edge from sinking in case of rupture. Having multiple barrels gives you a warning that others may fail.
