PLease dont move. Im not a guide or own a guide business.

Wondering if there is any interest in a liberated quail hunt? I was thinkning about releasing 20 birds per partipant. The only cost would be for the birds - $100.00 per person. I would like to do it during the season to avoid any permit issues. It would be a great excuse to get together and watch each others dogs work. If someone has some land close we could do it there or I could find us something around the Haskell area. Any ideas or comments are encouraged.

Matt,
Too early to say for me. Just depends on when, what else is going on. I am sure others are in the same boat. I would bring it up again when season gets closer.

Liberated quail hunts provide a great avenue for guys that love the sport but are chained to a city job except for a couple of days each year...that's been my experience. I have hunted some corporate hunts at some really nice preserves and have enjoyed myself immensely; particularly with my dogs. There's a lot of shooting opportunities and given the high cost of quail leases and our sporadic weather, the dogs get some good work in. Here's a couple of pictures. I got to hunt the Joshua Creek ranch, and the other one is a private ranch in Starr County that I provided guiding services for.

I think it's a great idea. Just be sure and put a good workable plan together.

Let me know if I can help.

Could be interested if in Nov or early Dec. but one concern would be good flying birds. At that time of year sure don't want young dogs chasing and picking up birds........

You are right about that. The best place we have found in south Texas is Braune's in Three Rivers for good flight conditioned birds.

I have a couple places where I guide around DFW where we can hunt. I have a really cool place in DeLeon or a nostalgic ranch in Gainesville. Trespass fees would apply but we could even spend the night in DeLeon and stay in the bunkhouse, cook on the big pit and have a good time for minimal cost. Let me know and I can set it up.

I know it is a little early to be talking about quail hunting, but after seeing all the quail in my pens and messing around with my restoration project Im really getting an itchy finger.

Ive never been on a liberated hunt or at a shooting preserve. Ive only hunted wild birds. I sell birds to preserves and to individuals for liberated hunts, but I have only used them myself for training. So any suggestions to make this run easier would be greatly appreciated. I just think it would be fun to put some faces with names, watch some dogs work, and shoots some birds. I would like to invite everyone out to where I hunt, but Im a friend of friend so thats out of the question. And why pay a preserve 200 a day for something I think we could put together pretty easy.

The one thing I can gaurantee is that the birds will be good fliers. Probally taste pretty good to. Ill bring this back up in September.

Not my hunt, but I've guided 8 year old kids. As long as they know safe gun handling, they have a blast!

I'll go, there will probably be three of us. I just need to know about three or four weeks in advance unless it's a weekend. I'm off every weekend.

I've got 107 acres near Chico we can use, if that's handy for anyone. It's mostly fallow, weedgrown farmland w/ a little brush.

I'd rather kiss my sister than hunt pen raised birds. I drive thousands of miles to hunt wild birds. MT to OK to eastern NC. It's not about killing it's about the dog. Stuart

You can do both without having to kiss your sister. Hunt wild birds and shoot pen raised birds that is.
We all hunt wild birds too you know. Look at it like a day shooting clays. It is about fellowship.

I know and on very rare occasion and only with older dogs do I hunt pen raised. I looked at your profile and love your Vizsalas. Came close to getting one a few years ago. So far I have 2 EP's a Brittany And a GSP. I hunt with friends who love ES's. All great dogs. When I get old I will cut back to one Brittany. Don't want dogs to outlive me and my wife to have to deal with what to do with a bunch of dogs. Stuart

After the response I think this idea is worth moving forward with. I think it is best that we limit participation to 10 - 12 people. Actually, 5 - 6 two dog cast With a limit of 2 hunters per dog, for a total of 4 hunters per cast. After the initial morning hunt we pair up again for an afternoon hunt. I can only imagine, it would only take two dogs about an hour to find 20 birds. That way, family members, friends, and members without dogs can participate. I have extra dogs that I wouldnt mind letting soemone shooting over. Everyone that has stated that they are interested thus far, are first on the list. As time goes by, I am sure that other obligations will arise, and I will move down the thread on a first come, first serve basis. In the event you dont own a dog but still wish to participate, the cost of birds and any other cost involved (trespass fee) will be the same of someone running their own dog.

I am going to get in touch with everyone that says they have land we can use, and get that part of it figured out buy the 1st of August.

Once again, any input is greatly appreciated.

That sounds like fun. I'd like to be on the list if you have room. My dog is too old to hunt now, so it would just be me.

I can bring along a couple extra shotguns in case some of the guests don't have their own. Maybe some of you younger hunters haven't tried a pre-war Superposed, ha!

Thanks,
Cass
