Ruger American Predator is pretty sweet but the 308 has an 18" barrel.

At least you didn't propose a Tikka.

On a budget it’s tough to beat the Ruger American Predator.

You don't specify action type. If bolt action, like others suggested it's hard to beat a Ruger American for the price. If semi, the best 20" barrel option (as most semi's are 16" or 18") is the Armalite AR10A.

In bolt action, another super good gun for the price is the Remington 788 Carbine but that will be 18.5" as opposed to the normal 24" in the rifle.

I bought a 16" Rem Model SEVEN recently in 308 and it shot really well.

I've loaded for a few, and shot one with factory ammo. They all shot sub-MOA. The bolt lugs need some polishing, but that's a quick fix. Getting the front action screw out is a PITA. But it can be managed.

That makes it easier to get a deal.

Go get one of those Sig Cross in .308 at Cabelas

I would but I got rid of all my .308 stuff years ago. I don't want to start loading for another rifle cartridge.
