I think, it's 46 years old so says my buddy who saw the serial number. I've never had one, but I have some buddies that have these and love em'. This is a very clean, almost like new Marlin JM stamped 30/30 I saw in the pawn shop today. It was over as soon as I saw it, but was still able to work on the price. I'll punch a hole in a pig with it this weekend and post up a pic. I've wanted something with irons to ride on my 4 wheeler, this is it. [Linked Image]

Congrats!

Both the .30 WCF cartridge and the Marlin 336 platform are VERY serviceable bits of equipment (even in this day of launching bullets into the neighboring zip code).

Personally I'm not a fan of the factory Marlin rear sights and the Luddite in me rebels at the thought of mounting a scope on anything as handy as a saddlegun, but the folks at Skinner Sights build rugged and accurate receiver sights that allow even my old eyes to make things uncomfortable for the piggies! Give 'em a look, several of my Marlins (and one odd Browning 53) wear them (.32-20, .357, .30 WCF, .38-55, .45-70).

Thanks, I'll check out skinner. My team recommends the Williams Peep sight.

I have some Lyman peeps hanging around that I just took off my Marlin. Great sights, for folks who can see. If you want to try them just PM me.

Looking good. I've hunted with my JM 30-30 for over 30 years now. Just love it. Sometimes think I want a new modern deer rifle but I just can't give it up. Something about a lever gun.

Dad gave me a brand new one in 1997, it's still hanging on the wall.

Dang good rifles!

It has some real clean metal on it. Very nice.
I inherited my dad's Winchester 32 sp. I'm not sure how old it is I'm 70 and he had since I can remember.

Tough time on ammo today, ended up with Federal Fusion 150 gr. Bonded. Really wanted to try Hornady, with the rubber tip. Leverevolution??? Having never used it but seen it, I wondered how the tip and primers acted together in the tube. I watched the Hornady Video on it and they described it as rubber. Reviews on it are very good.

My Marlin, Henry, and Winchester 30-30's all shoot Federal Fusion extremely well. However, my Marlin is one of the more recent models with a "Micro Groove" barrel that scatters Leverevolution ammo as others have reported. I've heard that earlier models like yours shoot it quite well. Google some of the discussions on the subject if you're interested in learning more.

It’ll blow the rubber tips off just like the 6.5 does

Pushing the intended humor aside, those familiar with lever guns with a tubular magazine know the rounded nose on ammo is to avoid discharges from more pointed bullets impacting primers. It has nothing to do with ballistic performance, especially given the short-range performance of the 30-30. The folks at Hornady obviously added the rubber tips due to the more pointed shape of the Leverevolution ammo.

Again, others have reported that earlier Model 336's shoot Leverevolution ammo quite well.

I shoot Hornady SST in .308 and 6.5 Creeedmoor. To just look at the tip on the 30-30 one would think it's the same material. It ain't.

Yes, best I remember Leverevolution ammo has a soft rubber tip added for the reason I mentioned earlier. Hornady uses a much harder polymer tip on several of their other ammo series in which they claim it improves "long range" performance. The 30-30 has never been viewed as a long range shooter.

It looks exactly like the one my Dad gave me for Christmas in 1963 as my first deer rifle.

My Dad had a heck of a time keeping himself and my three borthers in rifles when we were kids, he begged and borrowed when he had all of us there at once. A few times one of his buddies would loan us one of these. I was 12 in 1974, the year this one was made. I remember it as a 336C. Wjhat I have here is "336", no alpha designation. A lot of what I've seen have a sling loop, not this one. Looks cleaner without it. Every time I pick this up I can't believe the condition it's in. Not a mark on it. The crown and the load port are pristine. Going to shoot it tomorrow.

So will you leave it in original condition or add a scope?

Here's and interesting article that showed up on my email yesterday from Outdoor Life. By the way, I've used the LeverEvolution in my 30-30's, 35 Rem, and 45-70. They work well for me.

All of my lever guns wear peep sights. I don't like Lyman becaus of the way it mounts to the side. It just kinda screws with the lines of the gun IMO. The Williams peep sight is good, but it is aluminum. The Skinner sight is all steel. I like the feel of the Skinner and the fact that it is all steel. The Skinner sight is a better quality sight. However, I like the way the Williams sight adjusts for windage and elevation better. They are both good sights. I have a Williams on my 1895G and a skinner on my '92.

For now, I like it the way it is. I will add a Lyman peep that a generous THF member sent me.
