Australia does have a problem! I spent 10 days hunting and camping in Australia a few years ago and feral cats were always considered a good kill. It was rather odd to be hunting water buffalo one day, hogs the next, and cats the day after that. Once the dingo/wild dogs were eliminated in most areas, the hogs, rabbits, red foxes, and cats have all become problems. For a while, that problem started to show up on my property with an abundance of feral dogs and cats. After coming across a dog with rabies, and then having a run in with a pack of wild dogs I made a good effort to eliminate the problem. I don't enjoy having to shoot cats & dogs but at times it is needed. Once the coyotes moved into the area I have noticed a drop in feral cats. Now I just need to get rid of the coyotes! .

They are a real problem in Hawaii, largely because all birds in Hawaii are ground nesting birds. A couple of decades ago my brother sat out one night near the dumpster at his apartment complex. It was next to a sugar cane field. He killed 23 cats with an air rifle in just a couple of hours.

My neighbor's barn is a 1/2 mile away from mine. He has a thing for feeding feral cats. Thinks they eat lots of mice and rats even though he feeds them all the dry cat food they can eat. At one time I counted 12 grown cats around his barn. Momma cats are constantly showing up in my barn to birth. I exterminate momma and kittens as fast as I can. My neighbor is a good neighbor and we help each other out with lots of ranching chores so I never say anything about the cats. Only good thing is that my dog alerts me of coyotes and I get to pick them off as they cruise the trail between our barns looking for migrant cats with a thermal scoped .223.

we had them bad in San Saba, used to let them go then one night my grandad was grilling steaks on the pit, went inside for a second, came back out and watched a wild cat running off with his steak in his mouth. after that it was open season on them.

I have a yellow tabby that lives near my tank. I’ve been seeing him now for three years, but never have gotten a shot. Pretty skittish, but i am always shocked at how long he has made it - especially with the coyotes, bobcats, Fox, and badgers we also have. He must be good at hide-n-seek.

They breed so fast that shooting them hardly makes any difference. The population will rise to meet the available food supply.
If you create a vacancy by killing one, another will be pushed into that spot practically overnight.
The crazy cat ladies that feed the feral cats are not helping existing cats, they are creating them by increasing the available food supply.

That last part is so true and so horrible. People need to recognize just how devastating these feral cats are to ecosystems.

One less here tonight. 'Wind blew in the back door as I shot and now the living room smells like gunpowder.
