A close family member has it, and It’s awesome. Feels great underfoot and it grows well in shade / partial sun (unlike bermuda). I plan on sodding or plugging some of the shaded areas in my lawn where our bermuda struggles.

I wonder how it does with foot traffic and what the water requirements are.

From turf grass class in college it is a good shade/moderate water need grass. How it holds up to wear will depend a lot on how well you take care of it.

Boss has it in his yard for a few years now he loves it but it is irrigated.

Have zoysia at two places and love it. Very drought tolerant. Grows thick as can be and if you keep it mowed, it will choke out all weeds. Slow grower so does not need to be attended to as often as carpet grass.

This is it in a nut shell. Does do overly great in heavy shade.

Does great all around, especially if you've had muddy messes where you couldn't keep any other type of grass. The one thing no one has mentioned is it runs a pretty penny. Rubber band your jaw before you hear your quote

Love my Saint Augustine . Grass grass grows all the way it to the trees and some has never been watered.

If you can afford it get it. My family has it and it looks like a carpet.

I grew up with St. Augustine, it’s my favorite, but the regular Raleigh species won’t take full sun around here. We have a tough time with water restrictions. It does ok in the shade.

Get the Palisades variety. Not cheap but does swell. Better than Augustine.

I have it in North Texas and love it. I prefer Palisades for 2 reasons handles filtered sun light like a champ and is more drought tolerant than some of the thinner leaf blade varieties. Like others have mentioned it is more expensive than Bermuda grass but not much more than St. Augustine.

There are a good number of St. Augustine lawns in North Texas that have been replaced with Zoysia grass because of St. Augustine decline.

St. Augustine sod is the cheapest in this part of the country. It’s cheaper to replace than pouring a lot of water on it in times of drought.

I started with just enough to get me to my driveway to keep me out of the mud. I had a 5 year plan of sprigging runners. It took me 10 years.

Maybe I need your source if it's not much more than St. Aug for you...my mileage shows way differently

We replaced a failing septic system, and the new aerobic system has 1750 feet of underground distribution tubing. I decided to go with St Augustine for an additional 18 pallets that I had to get down quickly because of all of the trenching - I needed something fast growing. Last year, the cost was $160./pallet delivered for the sod. (450 sq ft per pallet)

I like how St. Augustine chokes out other weeds and it does well in both full sun and shade. I had Zoysia and St. Augustine (Raleigh) in different areas when I lived in Bastrop County. The St. Augustine needed more water in full sun areas compared to the Zoysia, but the St. Augustine stayed green longer into the fall and always came back to full green a good bit earlier in the spring. Both seemed to be about equal regarding Brown Patch susceptibility.

If I didn't have unlimited free water from the lake (complete with fish emulsion fertilizer grin) I would not want to pay for the water to keep this much St. Augustine deep green in full sun during extremely hot weather.

Marc

A Democracy is when two wolves and a lamb vote on the dinner menu. That is why this country was specifically not designed as a Democracy. We are a Constitutional Republic.

Back in 2000 I had 8 loads of topsoil and 18 pallets(whole truck load) of St. Augustine installed. It was really nice, pretty much covered all of mowable area. It lasted 8 years without an irrigation system. Then between the 10 year drought and the booming deer population, all that’s left are 3 small patches in the shade under some trees.

I’m thinking of getting Zoysia seed to put near our trees. My Bermuda just doesn’t seem to get thick. I’m trimming the trees steadily. Cutting several down.

No one seems to keep the Zoysia seed in stock. Weird.

Palmetto St. Augustine is the best St. Augustine in shaded areas.
