Who on here puts out wood duck nest boxes? I hung a couple up a few weeks ago and I just got 3 more finished. I realize it's more than likely too late for this season to attract birds to a nest site but I'm hanging them anyways so that the birds will at least see other options for next season.
So, what are the do's and donts of wood duck nest boxes in SE TX area? Specifically, NE of the Houston area around the Trinity River bottoms...

On dry land, 6' high. In water, 4' above highest water mark. Several inches of wood chips in the bottom for nesting. Predator guard. If near water, facing the water. Clear fly in path. Might interest some late nesters.

If you have them out SHORTLY, you will have hens in them if not the first go around but the second. You need to spread them out as far apart as you can out so the hens don't double up in a house, a lot of times 2 or more hens will lay in the same box at the same time. That puts maybe 35 eggs in one house and a single hen cannot take care of that many eggs so many, many are lost.
