The craftsmanship and skill that I see on this forum is so fantastic that I am amazed. I almost didn't post this as I fail to compare to you guys. But... we found an old Eastwing hatchet laying in a field at my brother’s place. It was a rusted up terrible, the leather was gone, and it was stuck in the dirt. And I lost my pictures of it that I took when I found it. I took it home and decided to make a project out of it. I grabbed some scraps that were from a mesquite that we milled from my brothers place and a bois d'arc that I claimed from a construction site in Temple. I pinned it with some brass rod from Home Depot and came up with this. And I learned a few things about drilling hardened steel on the way. My intent was to make a working hatchet from the old piece of iron but part of the way through it I realized that this could look pretty cool. I did not go as far as to stabilize the wood as this was a “just for fun” project. I have another hatchet that it similar condition that rode around in different trucks for 30 years and is coming apart. I think I might give it a go too. Any criticism or advice is accepted before I do another.

That looks really nice and I got a chuckle from the drilling heat treated steel part. I have said so many bad words doing it.

That looks really nice and I got a chuckle from the drilling heat treated steel part. I have said so many bad words doing it. Cobalt drill bits will sometime do the trick,... listen, all of us knife makers have forgot to drill out holes before heat treating. I did it on a stainless steel blade and I used a few choice words too. and I'm a minister. Anyway your work came out OUTSTANDING, you' re showing us up brother. Good job!

Any criticism or advice is accepted before I do another. None. OK, one piece of criticism. Please take a before picture. Your workmanship is top shelf. Love the look, and the fit-n-finish.
