Does anyone carry them with them as well?
If so what is the best for the value and cost?

Having a Thermal Monocular for spotting is the cat's azz. Minimally knowing there's something there to investigate makes all the difference in the world. I make that comment to state you don't need to necessarily have something good enough to ID at a given distance, just that there's something there to work on.
I have (2) ATN OTS monoculars (FLIR core, not their HD garbage) I bought used on ebay that I use. 30mm on a helmet (for driving and blind use) and 70mm for distance.
If I had to go buy one today, I'd still look used, but buy a FLIR Breach. If money is not an issue, there many more to pick from.

I have an older Pulsar, something like an LD19 or ???? It's only a 9Hz refresh rate, and the range/resolution is pretty limited, but it's good enough to spot something warm at several hundred (up to around 500) yards. I only have a couple of places where I have a line of sight greater than that, and there I use my rifle scope. I mostly stay in one spot and scan for activity, and even my old unit is a big help. Some day I'll upgrade, but I really don't feel that it's holding me back and it's a huge advantage!
I have two unwritten rules: 1. 2.

Looking for a hands free alternative. I drive around on my Pioneer with my ATN-OTS 336 9hz, lights off, looking for hogs. Takes a little getting use to being able to recognize humps/holes and staying away from branches, there’s no other way to do it. They easily pop on/off the helmet. Get a comfortable helmet with a way to secure spare batteries to it and a helmet mounted light source. I also have an Illuminator on mine if someone is using the Thermal and I need to use my NV mono. I think the Breach is a great choice. Charlie
