Shot my rifle this weekend and have never had this happen before. New Ruger Hawkeye 7mm Rem Mag and have shot approx. 75 rounds with no firing pin issues to this point. First shot out of a new box of Hornady Precision Hunters and the gun clicked but didn't fire. Primer was punched but nothing happened. Loaded the next round and it shot fine. 3rd round and another click with the primer punch but nothing happened. Could this just be a bad couple of primers or possibly something with the rifle? Tried loading a pic of the bad round.

Can you post a clearer picture of the head stamp? Is it 7mm rem mag ammo?

It could be a couple of things. Your picture is out of focus so I can't get the detail to see it. The primer depth needs to be correct for the primer to go off properly. If the depth is too deep or too proud, it can cause an issue. If the factory ammo is using a magnum primer and your rifle is not hitting it hard enough, it could not have enough force to go off. If other ammo is firing fine, then it does sound like an issue with that ammo. I would like to know how deep the primer is on that ammo to know for sure. But you can get bad primers, but I doubt that's the real issue.

That is what I was afraid of Chad. It has shot a box of these and multiple other brands and rounds with no issues to this point. Any way to check the primer depth? Just compare them to other cartridges in the same box?

Could measure with a caliper.
I would call Hornady as they have likely had similar issues with others in the lot if its an ammo issue.

Yes, you have to measure it with the back end of the caliper to know the primer depth.
Long story short, I had some CCI #250's causing hang fires and not going off in a 338 Lapua. There were 2 issues with my lot of ammo. One was the primer was seated too deep. Second, the CCI #250 primer was not magnum enough for the 338 Lapua I was shooting to ignite the 95 grains of powder inside the case. When you pull the trigger and then it goes bang a split second to half a second later, it makes you pucker up. After being on the phone with ATK (the parent company to Federal, CCI, etc), I needed to switch primers to a hotter magnum primer, Fed 215. Problem solved.

Give Hornady a call, they are pretty good abut it., Have the ammo box there they will want some information from the box mainly which ammo and the lot number.
Chad pretty much covered it. If a primer is seated normally it will be a little below flush with the case head, if it is flush itis not deep enough. Years ago I had one piece of Remington factory ammo in 7mm-08 that the primer did not have an anvil in itbut that created a deeper than normal indention in the primer and no bang.
Like Chad said hang fires are no fun and create a pucker factor and are why one should wait a few seconds before opening the bolt after a miss fire.
lf the saying "Liar, Liar your pants on fire" were true Mainstream news might be fun to watch

Had the same thing happen with one round of 454 casull ammo last week. Factory hornady custom 240 grain being shot from a Freedom Arms revolver. I hit it twice and it still hasn’t gone off.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.
