Headed up next week for an archery hunt.

Has anyone else done this hunt? This will be my 6th time hunting the unit, so pretty familiar with the terrain and stuff, just wanted to see if others had luck high or low (elevations).

All of my trips we have focused on getting high and far. The WM wilderness area has great scenery, super steep, usually not too crowded. However, we spend all this effort getting as far away from roads and trails and usually don't see the numbers that we would like compared to the lower elevations.

Being in town there are deer everywhere, has anyone hunted the public lands that are easily accessible and relatively "in town"? I have been in the country by the airport and East of town, but roads are usually pretty rough so have limited my time in there. Didn't know if we should give that a shot.

I have read on other posts/forums that we should find somewhere in town and will probably have luck, but would probably miss out on the adventureness of the high country. Whatever floats your boat I guess, just wanted to see if anyone had some personal experience there. Not looking for honey holes or spots per say, just general ideas to bounce back.

I hunted elk in 37, immediately north of 36, two years ago. I've been trying to get a mule deer tag in the area ever since.

It was a wet spring, but has been pretty dry and hot over there since. Archery hunting I would key on secluded water sources on public or hunt above private water sources and catch them early in the morning moving up into the public to bed for the day.

I had the rifle elk tag in 2017. Saw one very nice bull 2 days before the hunt started. Never saw another bull. Did see a couple respectable mule deer and plenty of cow elk.
