I have a two Remington 700 CDLs, 30-06 and .280 I want to Ackley Improve the chamber, who would you recommend around the DFW area for that type work? Thanks for the input.

I'd contact FiremanJG on here...I will be using him for all my future gun/gunsmith work. He did my 280AI...never been happier with a rifle.

A former co-worker of mine has a Remington 700 in .30-06 Ackley Improved that was done by MG Arms in Spring (Sorry not DFW).

They rechambered the factory barrel and did the load workup for it. The winning load was a 150 Grain Nosler Ballistic Tip at almost 3100 fps with 5/8 MOA accuracy. Not bad at all for a factory barrel.

A nice rifle chambered for an excellent cartridge.

Just my .02,
LeonCarr

Thanks guys, I talked to several listed and the two that seemed most knowledgeable of the situation both stated that cutting the existing chamber is something they do not recommend and do not recommend to a point they refused to do it and put their name on it. So new barrel in 30-06AI is in the future.

Furb, I'm not looking to raise anyone's blood pressure or get an argument started but out of curiosity I ask. Why AI a new 3006 instaed of going 300WM?

Couple of reasons. I have already upgraded my trigger and stock on the 30-06, so for $700 I get a custom contoured, fitted, and trued barrel and action.

Also, with the AI on the 30-06 I can push a 178Eldx pretty close to 300WM speeds without the additional powder so my ballistics will be similar enough in both Energy and Velocity to not have to go out and buy another gun, trigger, stock, rings, bases, and scope. At least that is my opinion on it.

Mitchell's in Breckenridge. I had him AI a 260 for me from factory barrel and it's a shooter. Plus he is very knowledgeable on the whole AI concept

When my buddy had his done, they removed the factory barrel, machined the barrel shoulder and barrel face to set back the existing chamber, then finish reamed the chamber to the .30-06 AI.

It was explained to him that just finish reaming the chamber without setting the barrel shoulder back sometimes will not completely clean up the existing shoulder/neck area of the chamber which results in not being able to safely fireform factory .30-06 ammunition in the improved chamber to make the AI cases, which is one of the advantages of an Ackley Improved chambering.

Without sitting the barrel back the headspace will not be correct and the brass will grow in the wrong area and cause case head separations.
