I know a few ranchers that would not appreciate shooting that close to their cattle.....

The shooter may own the cattle.
Trolling? Heck no, I meant every word of it.

I know a few ranchers that would not appreciate shooting that close to their cattle..... Keep in mind that the thermal camera shooting the vid has zoomed in. This makes objects appear closer to each other than they really are. Nonetheless, this might still have been a little too close.

Keep in mind that the thermal camera shooting the vid has zoomed in. So the cattle look closer than the shooter because of zoom? How does that work?

To each his own, but that would get me banished from my lease if the rancher saw that.

I was referring to distance between hogs and cattle appearing to be lesser than actual. I mention this only as a possibility in this video, not stating it as fact. I don’t know if, or how much optical zoom was in use. Just as a wide angle lens appears to make things further away, a zoom lens does the opposite.

I have been amazed at how close you can get to a hog in the field with the right conditions. No moon, noise/light discipline, and being downwind are the biggest factors from what I can gather. I have walked up in the middle of some decent packs of hogs and started shooting, turns pretty wild pretty quickly!

Zoom won't make it look like the cattle are closer to the hogs. Their relative distance will be maintained as they are in the same FOV.

That reminds me of the guys that bow hunt pronghorns by walking behind a horse. The extra body or legs is a good disguise. It was impressive that he was so wide open when he shot.

Some guys make it a big deal when it is not. I raised cattle and shoot around livestock when necessary, there is no issue with this shot.

I have walked up in the middle of some decent packs of hogs and started shooting, turns pretty wild pretty quickly! I once had a small group of hogs come near my ladder stand and begin feeding. Must have been a dozen or so including a boar or two and sows with little ones. Being more interested in killing a deer, I decided I would get down from my stand and scare them off. I got so close that I thought it might not be a good idea to suddenly scare a sow with little ones and slowly walked back to my stand. I've read they don't see very well and probably much less so when they've got their heads down feeding.

I have no problem with the shooting provided that the shooter knows the range, angle, and type of dirt he’s shooting in to.

He is using a high quality thermal scope, I see no problem unless there was a ricachat . sorry don't know the spelling.

He is using a high quality thermal scope, Which is pretty meaningless at that distance. He is close enough that the image may not even be in focus. I see no problem unless there was a ricachat . Since that can't be determined until after the trigger is pulled, that is a real problem with livestock being that close. It may have been an okay shot, but whether or not the shot was okay is often irrelevant to the perspective of the landowner.

I've hunted pigs at night in feed lots with cattle close, killed some good ones. Don't be a dumb azz and shoot a cow, not hard to do. Extra attention to background...….

And keep in mind that once a bullet goes through a pig, it may be traveling in a very different direction than you were originally firing. It may change direction by 30-45 degrees (that I have seen) and possible more. As such, I don't have a problem with shooting hogs that are behind the cattle from me, but do not like shooting at hogs with cattle behind them, even a bit off to the side. They need to be way off to the side if they are farther than the pigs.

Nope. I wouldn't shoot with the hogs that close to the cattle. Might upset the cattle, or injure one. Too risky(for me).

Not hog hunter, non in this area...and not a Texan so I should keep quiet.
However as an old guy I have one suggestion.
The guy that makes the video, and I am referring to videos in general and not this one, may own the cattle, may be the most skilled hunter and may never make a miss.
But all who post videos should realize that there are many who are rank beginners and who have decided to give it a try tonight.
So before posting a video, hunters should look at their videos critically and resist the urge to post any that might cause a greenhorn to do something dumb.
In other words, shooting those hogs probably was OK, but posting that particular video might mislead a greenhorn.
