Sorry, tried search and it brought up 200 things that didn't answer my question. Best way to ship? U.P.S. USPS or Fed Ex ? Has to go from a dealer to a dealer? Reasonable transfer fee? Thanks all.

As tattooedtexan alluded to-you can legally ship long guns to include shot-guns & rifles within the state (shipping FROM address must be in the same state as the shipping TO address) WITHOUT using an FFL! I have used UPS without problems.
I have always used an FFL to ship hand-guns as I understand this is the law.

I just shipped one back to Weatherby a couple of weeks ago. I used USPS (ground only) and it was $34.10 WITH insurance. They didn't give me any problems at all. The only thing that they ask is that you let them know that it is a firearm, and use a box that does not indicate that there is a firearm inside. A standard FFL transfer usually runs about $20.00.

If you are sending out a firearm, to the best of my knowledge you do not have to ship from an FFL. If it is in the state, it can go to the person. If it is out of state it has to go to an FFL holder. You can ship rifles via USPS, but not pistols. UPS or Fed Ex both ship rifles or pistols. I use fed ex out of convenience.

Per ATF...
(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.
[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]
(B7) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?[ A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

I know exactly what you mean. I'd like to know who these FFL dealers are that are so cheap. I won't name in names, but around here, one place charges 50.00 plus a 50.00 transfer fee. If your doing a trade, tack on another 50.00 bucks. 150.00 to do a trade transfer!
That's why I prefer FTF in my own state, if at all possible.

There are no restrictions on any part of a firearm EXCEPT the reciever. If the reciever is included in any package, you are subject to ATF rules.

You guys should try to team up and strike a deal with one of the local pawn shops. Typically, they are the cheapest on transfers.

You will need a copy of the ffl where the gun is being shipped. You will have to fill out a piece of paper that stays on file at the post office. You may want to call the post office first and let them know what you intend to do, so that there isn't any confusion when you arrive.
You do not have to do any of the above. All you have to do is verbally tell the postal employee you hand the package to, clerk, carrier, etc. That it is a firearm. I normally just schedule a carrier package pickup and put it in the notes section to comply. Yes you will want a copy of the FFL before you ship, but it is not something you will be required to show USPS. The form to fill out mentioned is only for manufacturer, dealer, or importer who ship handguns. Unlicensed individuals do not fill out this forum with USPS.
For reference to know what to say to the USPS clerks that are unfamiliar with their own USPS rules. And provided you are certain you know what you are doing is legal. Ask them to look up in their publication "Pub. 52, Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail" and ask them to read to you "Mailability" #432.1, d.
http://www.usps.com/cpim/ftp/pubs/pub52.htm
d. Unloaded rifles and shotguns may be mailed if the mailer fully complies with the Gun Control Act of 1968 (Public Law 90-618) and 18 U.S.C. 921. The mailer may be required to establish, by opening the parcel or by written certification, that the gun is unloaded and not excluded from mailing because of the restrictions in 431.2b and c.
Then if they still want to give you a legal opinion. Have them read on further to #434.
434 Legal Opinions on Mailing Firearms Postmasters are not authorized to give opinions on the legality of any shipment of rifles or shotguns.
It is as simple as that. And as already stated. You do not legally have to use an FFL to ship a "long gun" to an FFL out of State. Nor do you need an FFL to ship or receive if a "long gun" person to person in State. Note, Handguns have different rules. Only the one receiving the firearm has to be an FFL. But beware, some FFLs have a personal policy of not receiving firearms from individuals. I personally boycott these and any person I make a transaction with say with an online auction that require me to have an FFL do the shipping, I give them the reference to law showing it is not required, phone number to ATF they can call, and tell them to find me an FFL that will receive directly from me or no trade. I have never had one refuse me after I stood my ground.
The Texas Gun Trader provides a great bill of sale one can print.

For customers doing their own collection, we don't charge, but gladly accept tokens of appreciation, like the sausage and beer others have left recently.
If someone is trading/selling to make money, often doing transfers, we have started charging $20.
It's also nice to see if the dealer can meet or beat the price you are paying before asking them to do the deal for you... Several times, we've beat the customers price from somewhere else, and saved the transfer hassles I know exactly what you mean. I'd like to know who these FFL dealers are that are so cheap.
