I think shooting a 22 at age 5 is ok now bow hunting IMOP I think is around 7-10 and that is just target practice. Think about how old you have to be untill you can pull a real bow back with 50lb test I would say 12

If I put my wife in a high fence will her rack get bigger?

This is my daughter shooting my Granfathers 30-30 last year. She had just turned 6. I loaded it with Remington managed recoil loads and she handled it fine.

This subject is something I have yet to decide on. I have subscribed to TTH's magazine for several years so have read about all sorts of ages of younins shooting/ hunting. When I grew up in Minnesota you had to be 12 to hunt big game and then with hunters saftey classes first. You could hunt birds and small game earlier, but usually just played gopher and retriver for the adults and learned that way. I think that if you want them intrested in hunting they have to be involved.. Does that mean shooting a gun from a stand at 5/6 years old. Not sure about that. Here in Texas it's different, but not necessarily better.

i didnt shoot my first deer till i was 12 yr old, my pop wasnt much into deer hunting, and rarely took me, my uncle took me a few times but not enough, then whn i was 12, i had the hunter ed and could go by myself, and i did. Now my dad did take me dove hunting a lot though. I also started hunting by myself with a BB gun at 5 yrs old, pop tought me how not to be a dumbarse and shoot something that shouldnt be shot, so i didnt, i then moved up and started taking a shotgun, then a .22 and then bigger shotguns, and eventually deer rifles with me out to the field, now at 18 he will finnally let me hunt with nothing but pistols (pistols are very dangerous) i also taught about all my friends how to hunt and since i was safe, so are they. no reason to NEED to be 12 yrs old, shooting should start at a young age, and animal taking at a lil later, maybe 8 or so for a deer.... but i say that now, i wouldnt doubt it if when i have kids they hunt and kill a deer at 4 lol!!!!

Teaching Red Rider basics at 4th birthday. Today he is shooting a 1" group at 10 feet off a bench. He can't pull the trigger smoothly with one hand yet, so he uses both index fingers using dad's hand like a bipod. A .22 would be easier.

EDIT: He's 15 months older now.

She was only a whiskey maker, but he loved her still.

Both of my boys started shooting bows when they were 4. They both have a Matthews Mini-Genesis, a Bear recurve, and a home made stick bow. They aren't very accurate with them, but they have fun. Here is my younger one at 4 1/2 with his home made stick bow. I found out they are much more accurate when they are shooting at baloons or a 3D deer target. They get bored shooting the block.

I thing the answer is different for each kid. Get them started with basics and safety as soon as they show interest and are mature enough to follow the safety rules.

All my kids started shooting BB Guns around 5.

We have enough youth. How about a fountain of "smart"?

be sure he has a fore arm guard! I remember the first time I got a blister from my elbow to my wrist, I didn't want to shoot a bow again for a LONG time!

Forget it...you're 4 1/2 years too late...he'll never pick it up this late in life!

Kidding of course. My boy was shot his first deer at 3 (with his red rider directly in the butt but hey, it counts). Their never too young. My littlest cousin killed her first deer at 4, behind the ear with a Chipmunk .22. I know it's not legal but when a grandad is sitting there and the little one says, "I wanna shoot that one!" What you gonna do?

Each child is different. My daughter is going to be eight and does not like shooting a rifle. But put her bow in her hands and she can put 5 arrows in a 5" circle at 20 yds.

My son is going to be 6 and is not mature enough that I want to put a rifle in his hands yet.

I take each of them hunting with me all the time but I'm letting them tell me if they want to shoot a rifle or a bow. From what I have seen of my kids so far I think they will be just fine.

I tell them NO and explain the legal situation. Sorry, I just don't break the law for that, even for my own kids.

My son killed his first deer last season at 5 with a 222. Like someone else mentioned, every kid is different. The hardest part for me is, keeping the little fart awake. Oh, and by the way, my wife is "overjoyed" about all of this !!!!!

I think it depends PURELY on the maturity of the child. I started shooting at deer at 6. I've met several 6 year olds that act 3 and are quite scary with a airsoft gun. I believe if the kid is attentive and listens, he can shoot when he understands fully, the saftey of shooting. My dad drilled the "if you're not squeezing the trigger, the gun's on saftey" rule into my head constantly. Learning barrell pointing responsibility, saftey on and looking past the target are so key. Once they get it, I think they are good to go under supervision.

Sad. Must be a democrat.
